Butterfly was the first album I heard by Mariah and it's the only one that I actually own a physical copy of! The Roof is such a great song and I love her cover of The Beautiful Ones. Such a flawless album
YASSS!! Time for her best, her magnum opus, a masterpiece and one of the best of all time!
Honey is my most played song on last.fm . It must be her best video too, her Spanish words
Butterfly (song) is a gem.
My All is easily the most remembered song on the album by the GP WW. A latin-influenced ballad full of honesty and emotion.
The roof... What a a lyrical masterpiece (just like most of the album, but this stands out)! Most ATRL's faves wish.
Quote:
It wasn't raining yet
But it was definitely a little misty on
That warm November night
And my heart was pounding
My inner voice resounding
Begging me to turn away
But I just had to see your face
To feel alive
And then you casually walked in the room
And I was twisted in the web
Of my desire for you
(And I was twisted)
My apprehension blew away
I only wanted you
To taste my sadness
As you kissed me in the dark
About Fourth of July, I didn't like the song at first listen but it has grown a lot on me since. The lyrics are brilliant, you can imagine the whole situation she is describing.
Quote:
Thunder clouds
Hung around
So threateningly
Ominously hovering
And the sky
Opened wide
Showering
Breakdown is a personal favorite in Mariah's discography. A true hip hop soul staple, and the feature here is on point. So catchy and good
I didn't care a lot for Babydoll and Close My Eyes like 1 year ago, but now I can really appreciate these two gems. No negatives, indeed.
Oh, I love Whenever You Call. One of the few songs I have ever cried over. That beautiful melody and her vocals towards the end. The acrobatics. Oh, and that video. So nostalgic. Fits 100% with the song.
Not a lot of things to say about Fly Away but that it is an underrated song in Mariah's discography and I think it has a perfect placement on the album.
The Beautiful Ones is easily one of her best covers. It is a bit long, just as the original. I'm glad she did extreme justice to this Prince masterpiece. Dru Hill does a really good job too
Outside is another song I din't care a lot about first, but it has now become one of my favourites on the album. She mirrors herself in this song, so her emotions when writing it with the bottom of her heart can be totally feeled when listening to it. What a great message

Now, leaving the music field, I think that she looked the best during this era. Her liberation from Tommy was needed.

Finally, let me thank Mariah for creating such work of art. It's sad that this is not one of her best-selling albums, but well, it's their loss not mine.
I have mixed feelings about Butterfly. It is hands down one of her best albums. Less filler than her previous records, But it's hard to not notice her voice beginning to wain on the album. I don't think overuse is as much to blame as people think. i think Mariah around this time had stopped seeing a vocal coach, and she begin working a much more grueling schedule resulting in less sleep, and the stress of the divorce, and media scrutiny on her new image began taking a toll on her
For some reason, her vocal condition worked for Butterfly. It's a very smooth, sexy and sultry album, so her Music Box clear, resonant voice wouldn't have worked that much. That little rasp and push added passion and color to the vocals.
Although I do wish Outside during the Daydream era, cause that song needed the Daydream vocals
The turning point album, the "magnum opus" in the lambily, the rebirth...
Fav single - Butterfly
Top 5 Tracks - The Roof, Breakdown, My All, Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise), Close My Eyes
Favorite performance - Vh1 Divas Live '98. Those that have seen it will know why
Also, her and Nippy's standoff at the '98 VMAs was an iconic moment.
Babydoll is totally underrated as well. Most of the other songs on the album are considered fan favorites but I feel like Babydoll is sometimes pushed aside when I think it's her sexiest record to date. Her lower register is just I can slow groove to that song all day long. Especially at the end with those "do-do-dooo"s

I mean don't get me wrong, part of Mariah's talent as a vocalist was her ability to make her voice work no matter what state it was in and Butterfly is a main example. I love the Album but it's also the album that started to bring her close to her breakdown, vocal issues, and she transitioned also. The album itself is great, i sometimes wish she would have taken a rest after Daydream and let her voice heal before recording.
Babydoll is one of her catchiest, most addictive r&b songs. I think she should have featured Missy, since they wrote it together. That would have elevated the song from a 9 to a 10 tbh But it's sexy as hell as it is :melryan:
Outside is lyrically one of her best songs ever. She just captured the emotion of feeling left out and alone so perfectly
Her cover of The Beautiful Ones is her best cover and the Without You stans can seethe. The way she MURDERED those adlibs from the fourth minute onwards
And then Fourth Of July is just dreamy. Pecinta already accurately clocked the fact that it's UTS 2.0 but it's still heavenly

That's true! She should have definitely taken a break after Butterfly or at least after #1s
I still think Outside is the saddest song she's written. All her other personal songs about like family problems or Tommy are about problems she's faced in the past and will continue to recover from, and like Looking In where she says she will always remain true to herself and can't be brought to her knees and there's some sort of broken power where she knows about her insecurities and will continue to deal with them, while Outside she just admits defeat and that "although you try" "you'll always be somewhere on the outside"

Haven't posted in a bit here. That gap between Emotions and Butterfly was one of her longest ever but glad she took her time to make Butterfly.
Anyways her tone was DIVINE on this album, I don't care who thinks it. There's this sort of magic dreaminess to it, from her coos to the placement of her belts that's just perfect. Also, it gave us one of her best vocals.
Her looks: ON POINT. Possibly the most beautiful pop star ever at this point in the game.
My All/Stay Awhile
The fact that she decided to do what she wanted to do after so much success--at the risk of alienation--has always left an impression on me. Some sing about breaking free, while others sing about it and actually BECOME free.

Babydoll is by far my favourite track of the album and probably one of my favourites from mimi ever!
It's 2:11 and I'm stressing watching TV in my hotel suite
I check my service every second at 2:10 you still hadn't called me
So I'm gonna leave my cell phone turned on in my purse by the bed
And before I fall asleep I guess I'll just check my machine
Again and again because I'm obsessing on you
And her run in her lower register on that last line is one of my favourite mimi vocal moments ever!
