65. B.o.B feat. Priscilla - John Doe "Seems like your heart stops working / The minute they close the curtain... / And if anyone asks you're taking a small break / Drinking some coffee / But everyone knows what you're doing... / Who do you think that you're fooling? / John Doe, I just want the John I know / Once you put the drinks on hold / Maybe you could come back home / John Doe"
I wanted this song to smash as well. John Doe is the first time I’ve heard Priscilla on a track since her debut single, Dollhouse, and her voice sounds amazing and stronger than ever. B.o.B’s verses are on point as well. John Doe truly deserved to be the next Airplanes, so I’m really disappointed this song ended up flopping.
64. Kylie Minogue - Into the Blue "No angel’s too good to fall from grace / If she let’s go of whatever keeps her holy... / When I get my back up against the wall / Don’t need no one to rescue me / 'Cause I ain’t waiting up for no miracle / Yeah tonight I’m running free / Into the blue"
I forgot about Into the Blue until almost the last second when I was compiling my Top 100 of 2014. When I first heard this track, I was slayed, and I thought it had the potential to be the next We Found Love. The beat is incredible and Kylie’s vocals sound heavenly. Unfortunately, this song flopped as well. It’s a shame all of these amazing songs aren’t widely known and appreciated.
63. Lea Michele - If You Say So "It's been seven whole days / Without your embrace / I want to see your face, / I got some things to say / Was just a week ago, / You said, "I love you girl." / I said, "I love you more." / Then a breath, a pause, you said, / "If you say so."
Lea Michele makes her debut on my Top 100 of 2014 with If You Say So. This song is written about the last words that Lea and Cory texted each other- and, damn, does it pull at your heartstrings. Lea deserved a lot more success in 2014, and this song plus her debut album are clear indications of that. Lea is one of today’s most powerful singers, and she deserved much more recognition.
62. Brand New - Jesus Christ "Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face / The kind you'd find on someone I could save... / Well, Jesus Christ, I'm alone again / So what did you do those three days you were dead? / 'Cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend"
After dominating the top ten of my Top 100 of 2014, Brand New have a single entry in 2014 with Jesus Christ. This hauntingly poetic track off of Brand New’s 2006 album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is a lyrical masterpiece, but fell short of the same slayage as they achieved previously simply because I was not ready for it. I’ll save the rest of the songs on this album for when I truly need them.
61. Hozier - Take Me to Church "My lover's got humour / She's the giggle at a funeral... / If the heavens ever did speak / She's the last true mouthpiece... / The only heaven I'll be sent to / Is when I'm alone with you... / I was born sick / But I love it / Take me to church / I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies / I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife... / Good God, let me give you my life"
Keeping with the ‘holy’ () theme, the next song on my Top 100 of 2014 is Hozier’s Take Me to Church. I was not expecting this song to smash on the mainstream charts, but I’m definitely glad that it is. With its powerful music video, Take Me to Church is an anthem that deserves the recognition and the attention that it’s getting. Kudos to Hozier for crafting such a powerful song.
