The first year she performed, the VMAs decreased by over a million viewers.
2006, when she performed, had the lowest ratings of any VMA broadcast ever including this one.
That's not to say she's responsible for either of those faults. Certainly not, but no more than Rihanna or Taylor would be for this year's. Rihanna performed in 2007 and 2008 which both year's showed up an uptick in viewers. Not to say she was responsible for that either.
But in 2009, the other year Beyonce performed, it only did an uptick of 0.5 million on 2008. And if you accredit that to anyone other than Michael Jackson's death or maybe Gaga's debut then........lol
2011, sure she had a moment THERE on stage, but why would she be held responsible for the uptick in viewers overall? None of her other appearances earlier that year had drawn ratings gold nor did she have hits. Why is she considerably responsible for it, and not Gaga? Or how about Adele who had an unprecedented year? What about Britney, who always brings VMA ratings? What about Kanye/Jay-Z performance? Or even Katy Perry?
I'm not sold on Beyonce being a ratings draw. There's no factual evidence to support that she is.

I was just going to enjoy the stan meltdowns and utter seething in this deliciously messy thread until I got to this; completely illogical.
2003 Bey was nowhere near as big of a star; her debut solo album came out six weeks prior to that VMA. And lest we forget, that was the year that Britney and Christina opened the show kissing Madonna on stage...the year when both Britney and Christina were at their peak, on stage with the biggest female musical act, legend and pop culture icon of all time. What is the excuse for that?
2006 there weren't that many major stars; only Bey and Justin Timberlake. And even then at that point, her star as a solo artist was still growing. The B'Day era was barely kicked off and the lead singles, Deja Vu and Ring The Alarm hadn't performed nearly as well as the lead singles to DiL. The monster hit Irreplaceable didn't even exist yet to the GP. That show, like this year, lacked a necessary level of star power.
But, since, Bey has done nothing but further cement herself as a music industry fixture and ascended into an elite level of stardom that goes beyond how hot her last single was or how well her last album sold. A luxury afford to VERY few in the industry.
No factual evidence to support the fact that she is a ratings draw? Ch.
5.1 Million tuned in to watch her televised concert
all by herself; 6.1 million tuned in Thursday. That's what? 80-85% of that entire VMA viewing audience? Yeah, no draw whatsoever.
You can try your best to deny Bey's star power, but, the receipts have been rolling off the spool for years. And they're undeniable. She's THE top female Billboard artist of the '00s [
receipt], over 9 figure grossing world tour; 4 consecutive number one albums; more awards and acclaim than any other current mainstream female act; WW gross movie box office of over $700 million [
receipt] -- the ONLY current mainstream singer that has proven to be able to carry a movie on her name ONLY and turn a profit or even break even before going to DVD [
receipt](Britney couldn't even at her peak, Christina couldn't, Katy couldn't); not to mention 1/2 of one of the biggest celebrity power couples on the planet -- THE biggest in the music word [
receipt and another]...I think you get the picture. Ha credentials are proven; have been time and time again. The numbers don't lie. Period.
Anyway, I'm not going to be delusional and say that Beyonce and Beyonce alone could have carried a show. It is silly to attribute the success or failure of an award show to the presence or absence of any one person; however, there is a reason why last year's VMA was THE most watched of all time and it's silly to say that Beyonce didn't play a major role; as did Gaga, Adele, Britney...it was a perfect storm of elements, combination of star power, highly anticipated performances and awards, surprising and memorable moments...
Starting with Beyonce -- America's sweetheart, one half of THE biggest power couple in music, who walked the red carpet revealing her baby bump confirming the rumors amongst her stans and shocking the GP; this immediately nearly broke Twitter and kicked the viewership into overdrive as people saw Twitter ablaze and tuned in out of curiosity and then were held captivated by one of the best musical award shows in recent memory:
Anyway, I've made my point. Toodles.
