But how are Man Down, California King Bed, Cheers, Skin, and Whats My Name part of that 50 hr dance track?
Name a song before Only Girl that was like it on the radio by any female...
i knew someone was gonna do this.
A lot of LOUD isn't dance but it still felt generic & unauthentic, give or take a few songs. It's hard to explain because it's not an exact science to this kind of discussion- but the LOUD era just lacked. Lacked in a certain texture and richness of something from the 2 eras prior to it.
GGGB felt like the arrival of a superstar. Rated R was something that is appreciated in retrospect. LOUD is just an "oh, it's rihanna" era that just burned out fast & it seems that the next era will have the same feeling. I looked thru the WFL thread and i saw rihanna stans that were already burned out on the song.
Like KayBee said about the gourmet feast vs hot pockets metaphor.
But now i've probably ventured from my original point and not making any sense.
No, she actually danced. What's your definiion of dancing? She did ballet too, and showed she had some cute lines, (fluid movements and extension with her arms) when she was doing the thing with the rain drops so.......
Everyone is so hypocritical. Everyone CRAVED for more "dance" Rihanna, then they got it and its generic.
Everyone CRAVED for Rihanna to move more. Then she put in choreography, danced on her tour and in the WMN? performances and everyone said that it isnt anything.
Everyone CRAVED for Rihanna to be more hands on. Then she did it for Rated R but somehow it doesnt count.
The fact is, she did almost all of the most wanted of us and because it was successful, people get mad.
Everyone hated Rated R when it came out. And now they're praising it to the heavens. People are going to hate on Rihanna no matter what she does.
lol I think you guys take the music industry to seriously. Believe or not, the average listener is a causal listener and they just want to hear music that's appealing to them at any given moment. They aren't nitpicking the versatility of an artist. If someone wants to dance or chill out to feel good music they'll listen to Rihanna if they want to hear music about love/heartache they'll listen to Adele. The average listener won't hesitate to venture off in their taste in music or latch on to the music of a new artist. It's the reason why NO artist is safe or established enough to guarantee longevity in their career. Anyone who thinks there's an artist out their who doesn't concern themselves with making commercially appealing music is deluding themselves.
You said it perfectly.
At the end of the day, Rihanna's target audience isn't just a bunch of homosexuals (and some females, of course) who seek "deep" music; she wants the general public to love it as well. She performs and records what's popular at the moment, but with her own spin on it. Why would Rihanna perform some **** that would have only been successful in the early 2000s? Why would Rihanna perform some **** that wouldn't even reach the pits of the Bubbling Under chart? She wouldn't. Of course her label has a huge say in what kind of music she can record; but Rihanna also seems to genuinely love recording upbeat dance music. Why should she change that?
It wasn't really directed towards you, it was more so directed towards i spit on haters incessantly trying to prove how much he hates Rihanna and why. Rihanna has never been a "dancer"; with the exception of a few videos where she had a scene or two of choreography and a couple of performances where she did some ***** popping, hip grinding, etc. I've never understood why people expect any dancing out of her, and this goes for the stans, too. I'd rather her not do any crazy choreography because I know that she isn't capable of it. It would also likely take away from the performance as a whole. Her stage presence has improved over the years, and it continues to improve. I do agree that she needs to work on it a little bit, though.
Oh okay. True, she isn't a dancer. But just seeing the past attempts, she wasn't terrible and it's a nice addition to her presence.
Ok. But the fact is, it sold off of two singles. Fire Bomb COULD have smashed and made the album extremely successful. You said the public was not hear for that album, but maybe, they were just not EXPECTING a Russian Roulette type track.
Its the only "deep" song that failed. They didnt release any others, so we dont know.
"Rockstar 101" may not have been "deep," but it was different and "stood out" from what GaGa and Ke$ha were doing at that moment, but it flopped. Almost every time Rihanna does something different, it doesn't really result in anything good.
Eventually, Rihanna will grow up and make something that is more than just catchy, club fun and people will respond. Right now, I'm not sure people are ready for that Rihanna yet. After all, how old are her fans?

I would enjoy seeing some dancing in future videos and performances, but I know better than to expect that from her. Don't get me wrong, I've been let down many, many times as a stan; but I know that Rihanna will always deliver, even if it isn't what we're expecting.

true tea
she cannot go deep now, she would just flop. She can do that later on, she's just 23

Uhm...her fans are majority like 20+ year old females.
Teens like her - but not as much as Ke$ha or Katy. Her concerts consist of 20+ year old girls, older guys, older gay guys, some male teens, a bunch of girl teens and older black women.

But WHAT is she delivering in her performances? no shade but I'm dead ass serious and one of you Navy members WILL give me a mo'****ing answer up in this bitch. I admit her vocals have improved a little since her debut, but that's not saying much. At this point in her career she simply CAN'T afford to be as lazy as she is, if she was on a Madonna, Janet or Britney level it would be a different story, but for someone like her who's still in her prime...well...it's just inexcusable. She doesn't really compensate for her vocals as she lacks little to zero stage presence, she isn't a fearless performer nor does she get props from people OUTSIDE of her fan base for her performances. As long as she's been out, I still have yet to be blown away by any of her performances, that's not good. And what's even worse is that it seems like she doesn't want to improve as a performer. She was the it girl during the GGGB era, but she quickly got that title snatched once Katy & Gaga came out. You would THINK Rihanna would start to drastically improve as a performer to keep up with them, esp. Gaga

GURL!!!!! you as a Madonna stan should know better than that
she didn't have much stage presence and it was lip-synced, granted Madonna lip-synced her VMA Vogue performance years ago, but Madonna brought her A-game in that performance as she always does. Rihanna's voguing there was mediocre.
