As for the topic at hand, people get too defensive about these types of comparisons. Nobody really thinks Rihanna is going to take Madonna's place, but the two have quite a bit in common in terms of how their careers have grown. Both being 'it' girls when first appearing on the scene, having lots of hit songs, being respected by industry peers, known for not being the best at their crafts yet being more successful than many of them.
It's not a far fetched idea . . . hell even the way American's pronounce Rihanna's name incorrectly (they say the first 'a' as a short vowel trying to make it sound like the short 'o' in Madonna).
