As I said, I'm going off of what I've heard from all the old hardcore FF fans I've met over the years. I'm not saying that it's fact. In fact, IX and XII were actually my favorite games of the entire series, so don't come for me with the sarcasm. My point is that people have been calling for the death of this series for almost TWO DECADES now. Final Fantasy is not going anywhere. XV flopping is not going to change that. Bookmark me if you want. If we're all still on ATRL in 2080, we will be having this same conversation about how FFXV-2/XV-3/XVI will be the death of the Final Fantasy series just like everyone was 15 years ago.
At the end of the day, every single person complaining about XV's messy dev cycle on these forums, and gaming sites (myself included) will STILL end up giving their coins to Squeenix. And it will be more than enough to fund the next FF. FF is still Square's biggest IP next to KH. It'll be a long time before FF officially "dies out".

No actual self-identifying FF fan says that though. You probably have only talked to FFVII fans who mostly hate FFVIII becuase Squall isn't Cloud and hate every other FF game because it's not a FFVII remake.
Those aren't real fans. They probably don't even know who Bartz is.
Please know though, FF is on its last legs right now. Not even fan opinion. Post FFXIII (before FFXIII-2 was even a thought or out), the execs and devs at Square were saying how FF may be drawing towards the end (due to the negative reaction of FFXIII critically and commercially). This is also another reason why people thought FFXIII Versus was dead (along with the nova crystallis mess) even long before it was speculated to be dead last year right before it was rebranded to FFXV.
You can probably google the interviews I was talking about. The only reason FF is still alive is FFXIV's existence. Once they fixed the game, the fans flocked to it. MMOs are
really profitable. A lot of the best selling games of all time are MMOs. If Nintendo was ever to be near bankruptcy, they just need to drop the Pokemon MMO bomb and just profit for years to come.
So FF could exist in 2080 but it will probably be just a MMO service (in holograms, virtual reality, or some mess)
