disclosure, "F For You (feat. Mary J. Blige)"
I was a fool for not including "F For You" the solo version on my 2013 countdown but luckily Mary saved Disclosure from being cut-off for yet another year with this amazing collaboration. Two artists from two different parts of the worlds (location and genre) came together to elevate an already hot song.
|
04. |
fka twigs, "Pendulum"
It has the complexity and strange production of her EP's and her vocals are so beautiful. "Pendulum" serves as the B-side to "Two Weeks" and it's the most gorgeous heartbreaking track I've ever heard.
|
03. |
beyoncé, "Yoncé/Partition"
Of course Timbaland and Justin Timberlake had some part of this song, Interludes are like their "thing" and they do it well. With "Yoncé/Partition" you cannot have one without the other; "Yoncé" is the appetizer before the meal. First we get H-Town Bey gloating about how ***flawless she is and then we're lead into "Partition", which is such a sexy, seductive, lyrically controversial and quote worthy track.
|
02. |
banks, "Brain"
Is this the year of producer Shlohmo? This seems more like a collaboration more than anything. His production and her voice work in harmony to result one of the most explosive alt-R&B songs. The verses are dark, smoky, and she's no powerhouse but the build-up to the bridge and the effects done to her voice really give me an aching feeling. It's like all this track is missing is a feature from Yeezus.
|
01. |
fka twigs, "Two Weeks"
Prior to "Two Weeks" I wasn't sure if I was into Twigs yet, the songs on her EP's were interesting and soe too weird for my liking but this track right here was the one. This is forward-thinking R&B that still knocks like your average contemporary R&B song on the radio and capitalizes her breathy falsetto. This is just SEX.

Shlohmo is an amazing producer. I will listen to anything he puts out out after his mixtape with Jeremih.
Nice to see Partition, it is an amazing song that would have smashed hard if it had been promoted with some effort.
I didn't realize that the F For You Remix came out this year. It would have been around the same position in my countdown Amazing song.

I love most of the top 5! The F For You Mary J remix is ok and I don't really care for "Brain" but the rest are great choices.
Two Weeks sits really nicely with your previous songs of the year.

Love that Tinashe made the top 3. I did an ATRL review on it. I want to check out the top 3.
Yes, the recap.
75-66: I heard Gust of Wind and it's good.
65-58: Uptown Funk is very good and love to have fun with it. The best from this set.
57-51: Coffee is such a good electronic/indie pop song. So warming. Bey and Nicki are fierce! Like that Drake song.
50-46: The Worst is so good. I feel for her. i makes me happy and it's a great up-lifting song. Hideaway is such a great dance song. Feeling the 90s vibe.
45-41: Nothing here I like or heard, but I do want to check tUnE-yArDs.
Top 40! Let me rush it. Love that beat in Man of the Year, Tove is not on drugs, she's just in love. West Coast is hypnotizing, Bet is just incredible shame anyone who doesn't like this masterpiece. Tough Love! Chandelier is great, Take me to Life almost made the top 25. Chasing Time is one hell of a song, I'm sucker for pop songs like I Blame Myself. Do You....My Song 5! Let's 2 On! Go! Everyone's drunk in love these days. Surfboard! Like that remix of F For You. It's amazing. Partition is so hot! Like the #1. Good countdown.
Nice Best of, dude.
