Every artist gets promotion, anyone that says they didn't is following a silly excuse that has been mentioned here. Bey's new album had promotion, it was just a unique way of doing it.

No promo. If enough people are interested in an artist it won't matter whether or not they tell the world about their single/album. It'll take off and have success on it's own. Proof? Beyoncé, for an album. Proof? Dark Horse, for a single.
