Not the 'black people can't be racist' 'only white people can be racist' oversimplified mess turning up in this thread
I can't believe people actually think that

The saddest part is she had to apologize for wearing braids.

people asking why this is racist or talking **** about cultural appropriation are just showing how dim they are. black girls are made fun of for their hair, their lips, their music etc but when a white girl does it she's praised. for example magazines going up for Kylie Jenner's lips, Iggy Azalea being more successful than any of the other black girl rappers, this girl looking good with box braids but if you saw a black girl wearing them she'd be ghetto
see the double standard? its not being 'sensitive' or whatever, the injustice is clear as day if you arent an ignorant asshole.

So, a girl can't express herself and make herself look good due to societal factors out of her control?

I don't understand why people try to accuse "Cultural Appropriation" as being a bad thing. It's existed since one hunter-gather tribe saw another worshipping the sun and decided that it was a good idea and wanted to join in, and it'll exist until life on this planet dies off.
If we didn't "Culturally appropriate" society wouldn't exist, how could nation states be created if people from different towns and villages didn't interact and adopt each others culture and language? And now the same thing is happening on a global scale, it's clearly a positive thing for humanity - if we all evolve to have the same culture eventually there will be no possible way to hate someone for being different. One global Human Culture will be a fantastic day for humankind.
But sure, continue your screaming in the face of anyone who does something outwith their races stereotype, that's definitely the quickest way to end racism and create equality.

They did too much, and on a child at that. I feel sorry for her. But there is a real issue at hand.

That is why black people get angry. When black girls wear these styles they get ridiculed for not assimilating into white culture but when white girls wear black hairstyles they get praised for it. Its the double standard that is the issue here but I see everyone here doing the most to try to avoid acknowledging the crux of the issue.

I agree that attacking a 10 year old girl is misplaced anger
BUT there are bigger issues at play here. A black guy/girl rocking braids or dreadlocks will forever be tagged as ratchet, ghetto and unemployable on American soil.
A white person doing the same = trendy, cutting-edge, for obvious reasons.

Well, why do you think so many black girls go through so much trouble to make their hair "look like white girls?"
When it is ingrained in young women's heads that black hair is ugly, ghetto, unruly, etc. it really isn't a huge shock that those same black women would go out of their way to spend hundreds of dollars buying the beautiful, "good" hair. Or spend money to chemically straighten their hair. Or have to start a god damn movement just to get people to appreciate the hair that grows out of their own scalps.
People did entirely too much on this girl but the whole black girls appropriating Brazilians, Russians, etc. because of weave is a ridiculous counterpoint. Because this white girl rocking box braids does not carry with it the years of social conditioning that make many black women resort to weaves, wigs, and perms in the first place. "Beyquisha". Calling Rihanna's dreads ugly and ghetto. ****** trying to set up petitions for Blue to get her hair done. Too many times I have people with no edges ask me "and when are you going to do something with that head of yours?"
The fact of the matter is that this white girl can take out the box braids and wear her natural hair texture and still be considered beautiful. But let a black girl take her weave out or pull off that wig and Kunta Kinte comments are thrown around. That is the real issue at hand.
Unfortunately, when it comes to black people it is never "just hair." It is actually a very sensitive issue. And I think that is why so many reacted strongly to this girl's box braids in the first place.
(And let me just say that there is nothing inherently wrong with weaves, wigs, and perms.)

All of this.

It's just hair
This is getting ridiculous. If someone wants a certain hairstyle then they can damn well get that hairstyle.
How ridiculous would it be if you are forbidden a hairstyle that you genuinly like because "this other group of people called dibs"

It's not just a tumblr generation. People have been saying this for years. You hear it more because sites like tumblr are much more representative. You think it's a new phenomenon because you're more exposed to the the white-driven, Murdoch-backed, traditional media.

She looks good with those. Why can't people just wear what they want to wear? It truly is ******** that these people are persecuting an 11 year old for her hairstyle. How pathetic.

I don't remember persecuting any African American women for wearing "white" hairstyles. What kind of a double standard?

22 pages in and someone still insists on putting in their stale, uninformed 2 cents
it'd be nice if y'all showed the same support when it came to the prejudice and racism black girls face though
