He may have never said it, but I think this is one of those situations where it's very heavily implied. One Direction is never referred to as a "male artist". They're called a boy band or simply a group. Even the definition of the word "artist" refers to a singular person.
Obviously Alex gets the final call and I'll be fine with whatever he chooses, but personally I think it wouldn't be fair to give people points for groups when the question implied it needed to be a solo artist, since that would effectively be penalizing the people who chose from the 4 solo songs because they thought there were no other options.
