...and I'm back from work.
Now, As I said before you cant get charged with internet piracy unless you admit that it was you who stole it.
Why? simple (sort of)
For the non tec savvvy persons, when you buy an Internet plan, you get something called an public IP address, that Identifies your computer on the Internet. it looks something like
209.165.21.213.
This is mandatory, if you dont have an IP address set, you cant get to the Internet and 9 times out of 10 your ISP (Internet Service Provider, like AT&T) will give you only one, and only one machine (like your computer, or your phone, or tablet or some cases your TV) can connect to it at a time, and no 2 machines that connect to the internet can have the same one.
"But Smoke, I have my PC, my PS3, my phone, AND my tablet connected at the same time to the internet, you spear-chucking liar"
not so fast, Black. You can connect a number of devices together using special IP's called
private IP addresses and these and each device that in your house that connects to the internet has one, creating a small 'internet' of your own. this is what a wireless router uses basically. And usually starts with
192.168.xx.xx
Now, the thing about private IP addresses, is that you cant connect to the internet with these, these are never seen on the internet. and because of that, any two people (as long as they dont share the same internet) could have the same private IP. When you connect to your wireless router (and I'm explaining in the simplest way) your private IP is converted to your public IP and THEN you go out into the internet. when you come back, you convert back to your private address and whatever you wanted comes up on your device.
Now this is the cool part. Wifi most of the time is open without a password, and if its not, its not hard to hack at all, and steal a connection. When a Internet watchdog sees your IP address downloading something, they see your PUBLIC IP that your ISP gave you, not YOU, literally. Yes that IP address is yours, but You could have anyone with a private IP using your internet to download stuff, they will NEVER know it's you, unless of course, you tell them. Just say someone hacked your wifi and you'll be fine.
And now you know. And yes it's a long ass read.
