I never understood the 'uberpatriotism' argument against it either when the film clearly states that it was the US fault that they pissed off the Iranian people by reinstating the shah in the first place.
No, it's so good cuz of how effective Raimi's direction is and how well his style is suited to that type of story, and also cuz Alison Lohman's performance is pretty fantastic.
