In the last few months of 2010, there were loads of songs getting #1. We R Who We R, What's My Name?, Raise Your Glass, Firework, Like a G6, Only Girl, etc. I don't think we'll get anything like that again, now that the chart has been slowed down.
I think the only way the charts can really speed up is if radio stations stopped overplaying songs so much (i.e. refreshed their playlists more frequently and/or more drastically).
And lots of massive hits never even reach #1. Again, in 2010, of the top 10 songs of the year, 5 of them (Need You Now, Hey Soul Sister, Airplanes, Bad Romance and Dynamite) never reached #1, and they were all obviously massive hits.
