Let me explain how I see it.

If an all-male band is considered a male artist, then is a mixed band considered both a male and a female artist? No, we call them a mixed band. Likewise, 'male artist' and 'male band' is different. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are male artists. But The Beatles is a band / all-male band.
