Okay so I just rewatched the backhalf of S1 (lol) and this stuff comes up specifically in episode 11. In the end of the episode did only tell Tate "go away" and it worked, but before that he told her about "Croatoan". Violet tries to banish the gays (Zachary Quinto and that other guy) by reciting it but it doesn't work. BUT I think it doesn't work only because she was dead.

My theory on the twist:


1. I think the production company of My Roanoke Nightmare is orchestrating the whole story. I think they picked a house/location that had a haunted backstory, put a couple in the house, and staged all the hauntings with actors, hence why Matt/Shelby are never actually harmed. They always stumble upon something terrifying, the rest are just haunted stories being told by Elias and Cricket.
2. I think Elias and Cricket are actors hired by production. Their roles in Matt/Shelby's stories are too convenient. They always show up at the most convenient moments with the most convenient backstories (i.e. psychic specializing in missing children from New Orleans, where legit psychic/witches are known to dwell) and always provide Shelby/Matt with the information they need to scare them. And then when it's convenient, they disappear/get killed.
3. I think Matt is in on it. I think his traveling pharmaceutical salesman job is very shady. I think after he was hospitalized, he was approached by My Roanoke Nightmare and offered cash to help with the medical bills. I think they hired him to move into the house with Shelby and be haunted. Hence why he didn't seem too phased by a lot of the hauntings (up until Mason died, which I think wasn't apart of the plan) and was so persistent about moving into the house. Matt being involved would also explain why they never leave the house.
4. I think the twist is going to be the hoax coming back to bite everyone in the ass, and real hauntings occurring when the real cast goes back to the house.

7. Why can't they break inside the house, though? They trapped Lee and Shelby before.
8. Oh, my God. How can they still broadcast this type of scenes? That was horrible.

The best thing of this season is that it is happening to "normal" people and in an apparently "normal" environment (not in a house of witches, nor a circus of freaks, nor a hotel full of crazy people), much like Murder House and maybe Asylum (Lana, Kit) . It feels more real, idk particularly I feel like I can connect to those people..
