Movie REMviews
Mini Edition
| Lucy | 86%, B
This film was definitely an interesting one. It's pretty intense and gripping from the start, instantly getting me intrigued once I hit play. Scarlett Johansson really takes the film along and does an amazing job, while, in the beginning, we get some interesting breaks from the madness where Morgan Freeman basically lectures a group of people on the study of brain capacity, which ties into what is happening with Lucy at that time. Even though the premise is unrealistic, it's still very interesting and unique. Things start to get even crazier as time goes on and Lucy's power over her surroundings expands, providing us with some stunning visuals and effects. Unfortunately, the quality of the film takes a turn near the end, as we get a conclusion that became way too silly and ridiculous, while also putting a bad taste in my mouth. I mean,
Lucy becomes a ****ing USB so her knowledge can be shared with the world.
What the ****? Other than that, it's still a great watch and also a refreshing 90 minutes, so the thrill ride runs quickly. |
| The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part I | 90%, A-
As a massive, and I mean MASSIVE, fan of the films (though I'm too lazy to read the rest of Catching Fire + even start on this one,) I thought this was going to be my film of the year. Unfortunately it won't end up there, but it was still impressive. Though I can't be too surprised, because Mockingjay as a whole is extremely different from the first two films. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire feature a ton of action, while this is more of a political drama. Not saying that a film is only good if it has action, but there was just a little too much dialogue throughout this. Plenty of speeches, conversations, etc, some of which not even feeling too necessary. There's also times where scenes felt too long, such as
Katniss walking through a destroyed District 12
and
the victors getting rescued
. To agree with a popular opinion, it definitely does feel like a Part 1 as Mockingjay reveals the calm before the storm, how the revolution is being set up and the propaganda that comes with it. Even with its flaws, though, it still broadcasts very powerful messages, stellar performances and the latter half is definitely intense. Also, what really sets this film at an A- grade instead of a B+ is the ending. I was literally shaking after that scene, and it definitely leaves you ready for the finale. |
| Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier | 93%, A-
After a very underrated first film that I really loved, Captain America is back again, this time in present day. He now proves that even over 100 years later, he can still be an absolute bad ass, and in this sequel he does exactly that. Black Widow (Johansson) pairs up with him after The Avengers and they make a great pair, throwing cutesy dialogue between each other and showing a ton of chemistry. The Winter Soldier provides so many positive things such as action sequences that are very high-paced and entertaining, some slight jokes that'll actually make you laugh, as well as some amazing twists and turns. Even at a 126-minute duration, the film still moves briskly, though there are some brief, slightly boring scenes mixed in. It also adds in some drama, intensity and suspense that can really keep you captivated but also care about the characters and wish the best for them. The last 30 minutes or so are especially well done, as the final battles begin and things get crazy. Unlike some superhero flicks, Cap 2 really manages to keep everything properly executed and not over saturated, making it all very intriguing. This Marvel blockbuster basically gives you everything you'd want in this type of movie, and starts the excitement for Age of Ultron as well as Civil War. |
