As a Nicki hip hop fan, I don't even mind that much if the song doesn't have much rapping. Like I'd prefer a mostly singing song urban-friendly like Marilyn Monroe or Right By My Side, than a dance-pop song like Pound the Alarm, even if it has a lot of rapping in.
I have no problem with people releasing dance-pop songs occasionally. Like Rihanna does. But Nicki has gone WAY TOO FAR. Rihanna only releases like one a year:
2006: SOS
2007: Don't Stop the Music
2008: Disturbia
2009:
2010: Only Girl
2011: S&M and We Found Love
2012. Where Have You Been
I'm fine with that. Rihanna does it in moderation. Nicki is just being stupid imo. She's going way overboard. She's got almost as many dance-pop songs on ONE ALBUM as Rihanna has released in her ENTIRE CAREER. She needs to tone it down. Get an urban hit to prove she's a successful hip hop artist.
This era is pretty much a mess for Nicki. It's all over the place & confusing for her fans.
I wish Right By My Side smashed. In my opinion, it is one of the better songs on the album, and has influences of both pop and R&B. Even Roman Holiday would have been a good lead single choice, to appeal to both audiences. That's Nicki's problem; she releases singles that appeal to ONE OR THE OTHER audience. She never creates/promotes singles that have MASS appeal. And until she does precisely that, she will NEVER see a #1 on both the Pop and R&B charts.
I just hope Nicki can somehow pass through this era, and then on her next album come along with some What's My Name?/Single Ladies type smashes that can appeal to her entire fanbase, not just half of it.

No one even knows what the next single is. They have changed their minds on it so many times. It's very... Misleading. Especially since VVV has had a video shot already.
