^i agree it was dumb to make DH/WoA promo singles especially when DH was gonna smash so hard. i feel like it would've been unstoppable even if it wasnt a promo single

I was thinking this too, I definitely think it would have been different.

Damn her label tbh.

don't worry
Australia
#452 Dark Horse

Wasting a promo spot on obvious actual singles like Dark Horse and WOA was so dumb. Then "Blank Space", "Style", "Bad Blood" and "Wildest Dreams" all became the most hyped and successful album tracks (all charting on the Hot 100 on 1989 release week) and oh, look at what the singles have been so far? Genius. They were safe bets because she already knew the GP liked the songs.

All of this. That's way Birthday and Ghost/Love Me/This Moment would have worked as promo singles instead of two obvious smashes. No wonder with TD they went with CTD and NLTM

Legendary Lovers and Unconditionally should've been the promo singles

The one good thing is, Dark Horse only broke E.T.'s longevity record because it was charting on the Hot 100 since being released as a promo single in September. That's three extra months until its single release in December. Plus it hit #1 before the video, so the video just added extra weeks, the song was already a certified smash.

LL was too good to be a promo single. Roar was fine as it was, Unconditionally could have been the first promo single if she wanted people to hear it so much, then International Smile would have made a good second promo single. A cute pop song that obviously wouldn't be an actual single. Album release in October and release Dark Horse in the first week of November.

Do you guys think Katy has too much power? I feel like TD was planned so perfectly because her team was checking all of the decisions that were made regarding promo strategies and stuff whereas for PRISM they didn't care that much and let Katy decide by herself

There's literally nothing else to talk about tho. It's either this, how ugly she looks in Moschino or how her Christmas single/album has to smash otherwise she's over.

Yes and no, I was thinking this today too. It's good that she has so much control over her own career but I think she does need a new team who are more in touch with today's public and who are willing to be more influential with their opinions. PRISM era's management was its #1 flaw. Its like they just focussed on the lead single and hoped the rest would work out.

Not really. She obviously has a say to an extent but I think the feature with Juicy J, who has no correlation at all to Katy, proves that there will be a point in which she must submit to the demands of the label. How high is that point? I have no idea.
I'd assume that Birthday/TIHWD were forced to be singles by the label, seeing as she had no interest in promoting or giving one of them a decent video, but then again, she has the creative input to decide what video to give them cause I know that Dark Horse (video) could not have been wanted by the label.

I still can't believe how bad the PRISM era was executed. It could've sold over 5m WW easily, it could have given Katy her first Grammy, more longevity to the era and make it more memorable and iconic. Considering how massive the tour was, I genuinely think it could have been just as big and representative for Katy as the TD era. PRISM had so much potential, the material was right there, how could they waste it like that?

I agree. Maybe they were still counting the money made with TD and Roar and were like "Oh, DH is smashing? Let's release it and gain more money"

Well the tour could have been much bigger (not that it wasn't already) in the 2015 Europe and Asia leg if WOA was released, poor Sam, but I'm starting to think that we should give up on the notion that Katy will get a Grammy. It's not to say she won't make amazing music, but she won't get recognised for it. It would be great if she did get one but the industry, specifically critics, obviously don't appreciate the type of popstar that Katy represents which is carefree, colourful, and doesn't exactly "act her age" which is ageist in every sense but it's true.
But I'm still gunning for a Confessions type album/era to get her that Grammy

I think TIHWD was Katy's decision. With all the Djs begging for WOA it would have been really dumb for her team not to release it.

Well Walking On Air and Legendary Lovers would have had WAY BIGGER chances to win a Grammy than Birthday and This Is How We Do.

I somehow missed this post earlier but I agree entirely. TD was perfect because CTD and NLTM were obviously not singles but they maintained interest in the album. DH and WOA was just too much slayage. I didn't want to upset the Birthday stans but I do think it would have been better off as a promo single.

Birthday should have been a promo single! It's a great pop song but that's what it should have been! Double Rainbow would have been the second one.
