Yeah, when you get unsent songs getting radio play, they get kinda played out by the time they actually do get sanctioned by the label. Like with Princess of China, for example.

What's My Name? is just an incredible song, with appeal to people with a wide range different music tastes. The stations that were playing Trey Songz wanted to play it, and the stations that were playing Katy Perry wanted to play it. All that equals MASSIVE radio airplay. And What's My Name? deserved every bit of it.
As I was saying earlier, Nicki Minaj DESPERATELY needs a hit like this, to unite all her fanbase.

It could've done even better. It was outshined on both Pop and R&B charts, but it managed to outshine its competitors with both audiences put together.

Yeah definitely. But I think it'll be a very long time before we get another song that goes to #1 in both charts.
The last song to manage it I think was Single Ladies by Beyonce?

I think "Single Ladies" peaked at #2 on Pop, but I'm not sure.

Flo Rida is quickly on the rise. Probably will be in the top ten in 1-2 weeks

On Single Ladies Wikipedia page, it says it got to #2 on the "US Pop 100" and #1 on the "US Pop Songs" chart. I'm not really sure of the difference between them lol.
But if it wasn't Single Ladies, then I think the last song to get #1 on both was Take a Bow by Rihanna.

Nicki wouldn't be capable of doing that... Anyone other than Rihanna would not be able to pull that off these days. And she (Nicki) is fairly hated in the real world these days, not simply on ATRL.
But Rihanna has established herself as a pop staple, and she collaborated with someone who is not only hot on Urban, but is also appreciated on Pop. If she did a song like that with Rick Ross or 2 Chainz, I don't think it would have crossed over well.

Yeah, Rihanna is the only one who is capable of doing it really.
Nicki just isn't capable of doing it anymore. Super Bass went top 10 on both: http://www.billboard.com/song/nicki-...ate=2011-08-27 But after Starships, and if it's true she's releasing Pound the Alarm next, and then Whip It, then she's just cutting herself off, so she'll never get a What's My Name? type smash. Rihanna never starved urban of big hits. She's never released two dance-pop songs in a row before, but by the looks of things, Nicki is planning on doing 3 or 4 in a row.

She's compensating by doing triple releases. It isn't enough though.
Her Urban songs just don't have pop appeal. And vice versa.
Va Va Voom might have been a crossover as a lead single. But Starships might have wrecked that opportunity.

Nicki doesn't make good crossover songs. They're either very pop or very urban. There's little middle ground with her music.

It's her producers that she chooses.
RedOne is not going to give her a crossover hit. StarGate would be a better choice.

I agree.
Songs that I think would've crossed over well are Va Va Voom, Young Forever, Roman Holiday, Marilyn Monroe, Right By My Side, even HOV Lane.
But noooooooo. She'll just release all the dance-pop songs.
Oh well, we have Rihanna, the perfect pop/urban crossover artist.
I agree Stargate is a better choice. They produced both Black and Yellow and What's My Name?, which were both urban htis and got to #1 in the Hot 100 recently.
Dr. Luke is good with crossover hits aswell. He produces proper hip hop (e.g. That's All She Wrote by T.I./Eminem), and also pure pop for Katy, etc, and can do mixtures. RedOne is just a one-trick pony. He can't seem to do anything except watered down 80's europop.

She needs to be careful that her hip-hop fans remain satisfied.
For example, releasing Automatic would be a horrible choice. She doesn't rap at all in it.

This!!!
Even though I love Nicki, I must say that she has completely SLAUGHTERED this era. From the first "promo" single to the album cover, Nicki has done a lot of irreversible damage to her career. Likewise, she has gained many fans and has become pop superstar. I just wish she wouldn't have lost her urban appeal while doing so.

Not yet. When Drake's "Forever" passed 3 million, it was noted as his first. "Best I Never Had" was behind with 2.2 million. I figure "WMN?" is in the 2.6-2.8 million range.

All very true. I just wish the amount of radio airplay equated to its sales.

Roman Holiday might have without the Grammys performance ruining the public's perception of it...
And the O Come All Ye Faithful chant could have been omitted.

As a Nicki hip hop fan, I don't even mind that much if the song doesn't have much rapping. Like I'd prefer a mostly singing song urban-friendly like Marilyn Monroe or Right By My Side, than a dance-pop song like Pound the Alarm, even if it has a lot of rapping in.
I have no problem with people releasing dance-pop songs occasionally. Like Rihanna does. But Nicki has gone WAY TOO FAR. Rihanna only releases like one a year:
2006: SOS
2007: Don't Stop the Music
2008: Disturbia
2009:
2010: Only Girl
2011: S&M and We Found Love
2012. Where Have You Been
I'm fine with that. Rihanna does it in moderation. Nicki is just being stupid imo. She's going way overboard. She's got almost as many dance-pop songs on ONE ALBUM as Rihanna has released in her ENTIRE CAREER. She needs to tone it down. Get an urban hit to prove she's a successful hip hop artist.
