I think that regardless of anything else, we can all agree that releasing Roar, Dark Horse, Walking On Air and Unconditionally all within two months of one another was a terrible mistake. They just didn't anticipate Katy's promo single overshadowing the actual second single like that.

They better learn from the next era to keep as much of the album a surprise as possible until they want them to hear it. Then see which album tracks the GP respond to the most and release them as the singles.

I would honestly be fine with having only one single before the album.

I hate to use it as an example but just look at 1989. She had one single before the album and it worked wonders for her. Granted she also had two promo singles but she released some of the most uninteresting songs as promo singles as to not overshadow any potential single releases. Wasting a promo spot on obvious actual singles like Dark Horse and WOA was so dumb. Then "Blank Space", "Style", "Bad Blood" and "Wildest Dreams" all became the most hyped and successful album tracks (all charting on the Hot 100 on 1989 release week) and oh, look at what the singles have been so far? Genius. They were safe bets because she already knew the GP liked the songs.
