One thing I liked about Gravity is that if you take out all the space stuff, it's simply about how people avoid reality to deal with loss and the excuses they make. That's what Sandra is doing in space in the first place. The darkness, the silence, the isolation, the lack of human contact -- she's avoiding life. She has no purpose or meaning -- she's not really living...she's just "floating" aimlessly. The whole space thing is just a metaphor. And then when her life is put in actual danger, she has to decide if she wants to live or if she's satisfied to just float away for good.
