Indiana is not really as conservative as states like Oklahoma. It did go to Obama in '08. Same with Missouri. Like Louisiana with our new governor, if you can find a gun loving, military vet with moderate fiscal policies and somewhat liberal social issues you may win a "red state".
Indiana loves Bayh (Senate) and the Governor's race has shifted if Dems favor the last few weeks. Pence was a terrible governor. He was on verge of losing which is why he accepted Trump's offer.
