The thing is, the radio response to WWWY wasn't even that poor to begin with. Radio just started playing it basically as soon as Columbia confirmed it to Billboard in late December, which was earlier than the label wanted, so they made like the airplay didn't exist and didn't release it as an official single until way too late. Then when they did release it at a single, the radio was like "well yeah, we know, we were ready for it over a month ago". And boom. Or rather, sizzle.
AIA was great on Ellen but the song admittedly seems tainted now. Plus, I agree everybody's getting tired of the ballads--I think they already didn't want one after Hello, and the spring isn't time for one now. WUTB could be very successful here with proper promo if they wanted to have something in between WWWY now and SML in the summer.
1989 being the biggest album of the decade aside from this one and 21, one could recall Team Taylor too got arrogant after the massive release that was Blank Space in November and then half-assed the Style single release in February (noticeably cheap video, no promo slots). The song relatively underperformed as well. Came back strong in July with Bad Blood. So mess-ups happen, but can be glossed over if the label puts in the effort to play their cards right.
One final note in this "essay": wonder if XL and Columbia are disagreeing on this one? XL is still promoting the WWWY single as the first thing you see when you come to their website...

all this!
and yeah, they actually seem to be pushing WWWY in UK, getting to #4 on airplay there this week!!
but if sales/streams don't really follow along, there's no need to keep pushing it, just let it have its life.
WUTB really would be the best choice now, it seems really suited for radio, and most pop-friendly so far.
hand-clapping and big choruses always work and as opposed to SML, i love WUTB, it's top from the album easily, probably top 3.

Yeah, I agree. It was like they were trying to use it as both a buzz single AND the second single.

I will never forgive them for this. They can blame "poor radio performance" all they want, but honestly, it's their fault. First of all, "When We Were Young" has been getting radio airplay since the album dropped, but obviously not more than "Hello." I don't think anyone realized that "Hello" would have as much longevity as it's had; it's still huge. "When We Were Young" was trying to pick up while "Hello" was dying down, which was Columbia's first mistake; they announced "When We Were Young" as the second single in December, assuming that "Hello" would die down, and when it didn't die down fast enough, they waited until February to properly release it.
Then, after that, they half-assed the promo. There was a video planned and they scrapped it. They either let Adele or convinced her to scrap her "When We Were Young" performance at the Grammys in favor of "All I Ask." It's probably because they saw how "All I Ask" rose on the iTunes charts after Carpool Karaoke, WHICH WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN IF THAT'S THE SONG BEING PROMOTED INSTEAD OF "WHEN WE WERE YOUNG."
Literally... They had total control over this. They allowed it to do this. This is (in my opinion) Adele's best song, and they f**ked it over. For that reason, I wish XL could distribute records in the US, too. XL clearly gives a f**k about what Adele has to say, because it's her career. I feel like Columbia thinks they know what's best for their artists in terms of success because they have three of the biggest artists in the world signed to their label (Adele, Beyoncé, and One Direction). They're too concerned with the commercial aspect of Adele's career, and the only reason it's not more evident is because they have to comply with a lot of XL's decisions, which obviously come first because Adele is signed to them first and foremost.
Not to mention... The dumbasses put two live videos of "When We Were Young" on Vevo, waited as if we were getting an actual video, and then decided they'd pick the Church Studios video as the "official" video even though it would have been SO easy for them to do an actual video. And now they think "All I Ask" is going to smash, which is stupid because she needs a break in between the ballads, and the only reason it's doing well is it's been promoted like crazy in the US, while "When We Were Young" hasn't.
Sorry for my rant.... It was kind of expected because I really love this song. But I just hate that Columbia is just giving up on it when it has potential to smash. They just didn't handle it well. Now they're really screwed, because "All I Ask" is being promoted and picking up now, so if they were going to release it, they should do it now. However, it could also be damaging because it was preceded by two ballads and there needs to be a break in between with an upbeat song, and most of the fans figured "Water Under the Bridge" or "Send My Love" would be next. So, if they release one of those but then release "All I Ask" later, it'll probably flop because it was promoted earlier in the year.
Basically... F**k Columbia. XL needs to set up shop in the US too so that Adele doesn't have to have her albums distributed by a sh*tty record label in the US.

Neither WWWY nor All I Ask were/are single materials tbh
And as much as I love All I Ask, it would flop commercially.

Under that theory, Adele's potentially screwed for all time. HDD said she "inked a new worldwide deal with Sony" when they were leaking stuff about promo back in September...

yeah there's absolutely no forcing on Adele. she's calling the shots/not really caring
if there were, she'd ditch them and leave for some other or start an own label.

and...we are being a bit over-dramatic about this imo. i know addict would be pissed about it, and i understand. but things were going a bit unfortunate with premature half-official video and too early airplay, but as a matter of fact, it DIDN'T click with the GP. that aint the same as WWWY being a flop or not amazing, there's been tons of love from both fans, listeners and critics alike and it's a kind of album selling song. and i think they maybe should stayed with that since the full video came out in november already.
but it's easy in retrospect to say it. it would've been better as a third or fourth single just to keep the era going further and album keep selling with a real quality song out.
but i've thought for the longest time WITB would be the perfect third single.
enough, we've got so much already with music, performances, skits aswell as outstanding record breaking numbers and still, as fans, we've still the best yet to come; her tour!

You're right. Like you said, I was going to be pissed, and it was kind of expected, just because you all know how much I love this song and wanted it to become one of her signature songs. It's definitely not a flop, but it could have been HUGE if Columbia wouldn't have f**ked up. I really hope that "Water Under the Bridge" smashes as the third single. If they do what they did to "When We Were Young," I will never forgive them.

When We Were Young does feel like one of her signature songs tho. It has the classic sound.
