Manufactured in what way? LOL Everything Gaga has done is because that is HER. That is her vision. She writes all of her music, co-produces all of them, her performances don't rely on back-up dancers and props, she doesn't even rely on beauty, she got rid of her OWN management (which speaks a lot because when you're 'manufactured' you do what they say cause you dont have much artistic integrity). Let's not even talk about how Gaga has been doing what she is doing now before she was even famous. Being manufactured is so misunderstood here.
And clearly, since you know only a little, you don't have the right to bring Gaga into this discussion.

To be fair, nobody's an artist. Everyone is a pop star. They're products, not artists. Their "talents" are 100% dependent on their looks and the talents of others to produce and write their songs.

Britney is the original, we'll take a sweet girl with an okay voice, give her a certain sound and market her to young children, her success was manufactured by her label
shes still manufactured today, just look at britney jean
Ke$ha too, considering she like hated her life and music, Dr Luke manufactured her

Any reason WHY Rihanna is not manufactured? You all just laughing so confidently without FACTS.
She is not a slave, she is a money maker

Interesting thread. Okay, I see, hive vs britney army thing has started, etc, but also two different perceptions of the term spotted. Really, if we see "manufactured" as "built artificially and carefully" (maybe by artist himself), than... it's understandable why people say Beyonce - like, there's a certain impression she wants to leave after her: excellent, professional, respectable, faultless (even when she's flashing "little" flaws to look more "humane") and she's working her best to produce it and cut out everything that doesn't correspond. That's one of the reasons her fans love her, it's a matter of taste in the end. Then we see more "common" (imo) perception of "manifactured" as "built artificially and controlled by label executives", something in which artist doesn't take part. It's understandable why people say Britney - it's kinda "obvious" and "right" to say, due to specific criticism + the fact she gives out pop music, in past "teen pop" adds more to the twisted perseption. Not for good, actually, not very fair. People don't even look into the situation or try to make research into artist's career, which may contain examples of an opposite, and that's bothering. (Although I was pretty pissed when I saw Britney's documentary - it looked like she learnt the concept of her "Circus" music video the first time on set. Well, two sides of the story)
I'd say, vocal girl groups (especially pop), except a couple of examples, and boybands (also pop). It seems to me that this format itself leaves limited space for creativity/initially considered to be "safe", so it needs to be manifactured anyway.

Except the fact she co-writes, she's an initiator of her sound and image, hires people herself to help her express certain vision (thought out by her prior to work) and she's the executive producer of all her albums since "Rated R"

Thanks! I see that she is growing as an artist. I remember back in the days she was a product of her team, but hopefully she will develop more and more and start writing her own songs from scratch

Was Bey ever manufactured by her label? I mean honestly? Look at her catalogue. She basically hid the release of her album from all but three people....Her release strategy could've totally failed and had the label had it's way Bey wouldn't have released her album that way. It was pretty clear it was all her calling the shots. She got lucky that the material was good and people bought it.

Britney Spears. She has never been dim or the type of person who would let others boss her around, but back in the day her label guided her towards specific sounds and concepts for albums. I'm sure she does get a say in writers, producers and the general content of her album, but just think about the whole Original Doll situation. It's so f*cked up. But I think she's settled for it a little bit now.
