I don't care about the looks...at the moment. If having a basic aesthetic increases functionality then I'm all for it. I love Livewire, but I'd rather be able to post than see:

It'd be nice to upgrade to vB4 if that means no more lag. (That's the version GagaDaily Boards had running before moving to IP.Board. I can so deal with it.)
The layout is going to change with an upgrade to both 4 and 5. I think it's better to upgrade to the most stable version: 4. People complaining about 5 really stress that it is horrible. It's going to take longer than a month to fix all the bugs. There's no chance of a stable version with very few errors being released yet.
I prefer to wait until vB5 is ready. It's not that I don't like the 'basic' design, it's just that if we change now to vB4, then when vB5 comes out there won't be so much difference and I want a big change.
