Shakira’s “Sale el Sol” debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart this week, and also tops charts throughout Latin America. In the artist’s native Colombia, Sony Music is selling her Spanish language set album via an exclusive deal with mass merchant retailer Exito. “Sale el Sol” will be available exclusively at Exito stores for a period of 90 days.
Exito, which has over 100 stores in Colombia, has struck successful alliances with other major artists in the past. Most prominently, last year, the new album by Carlos Vives was sold exclusively at Exito stores, generating unprecedented sales volume.
In this case, Sony shipped over 120,000 units of “Sale el Sol” to Colombia alone and first week sales were over 50,000 units, according to the label.
Beginning in January, Sony will also sell “Sale el Sol” as part of a package that includes a book and will be sold in newspaper kiosks in various countries like Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay.
“It’s our way of placing between 200,000 and 300,000 units in markets where physical distribution has all but disappeared,” says Fernando Cabral, VP of marketing for Sony Music Latin America.
