For all of you who are blowing this out of proportion, please listen to the interview:
//http://rihannadaily.com/
She was not throwing shade AT ALL...she was just saying she wanted to do an album that fits who she is and nobody else. It makes complete sense since Ke$ha's music has been compared to GaGa's, Katy's music has been compared to Ke$ha's and so on...
Rihanna usually isn't compared to other mainstream artists when it comes to her music.

Oh, shiz!
These are some fightin' words!
Rihanna was on Radio 1 this morning, and for whatever the reason was, she decided to talk some serious trash about her fellow pop stars!
She said:
"I don't want that generic pop record that Ke$ha, Katy or Lady GaGa could do."
Unjustified, bb!
Well, at least regarding Katy and Lady GaGa!
LOLs!
What do U think?? Is RiRi talking out of her ass??

What about Ke$ha?

Exactly, hence we won't buy the cover up. Rihanna is not stupid, she knows that people have described Katy as generic this summer and the comparisons between CG and TK were widely reported. Rihanna is drawing attention that, and including GaGa as though all three of them can be placed into the same category.

Why would Rihanna go out and diss her friend? As you said, she is not stupid. That would be the opposite of smart. Your argument lacks reason.
This thread is out of control! Can we try to maintain a little bit of sense here?

Rihanna chose to move in a different direction to the sound that Lady GaGa and a few others had popularised. She was making a statement with the record, but nobody paid any attention to it. It didn't captivate the buying public, perhaps it pleased her fans but that's not enough to guarantee success these days. The majority of the people who purchase music are casual buyers, during the GGGB era Rihanna was the girl who best appealed to them. If her music was truly as innovative as you suggest then it would have had a greater impact.
She's totally backtracking from the sound she went with for Rated R for this new era. She's catching on to a trend that is already in full swing, she is certainly not going to be known as a pioneering force in the popularisation of europop because others did it before her. I think OG would have been more appropriate had it been released a year ago, it just doesn't sound fresh to me. It's a little late.

I do not necessarily agree with your statement that Rihanna's innovation should have resulted in greater impact. Yes, I do think Rated R was more original or innovative (whatever term we want to assign it) than a majority of the music her peers were releasing, but as you note, Rihanna best appealed to the casual music buyer in the GGGB days because her music was on trend for that time and the album was laden with insta-hits. The public is not overly receptive to experimentation from Rihanna and I would not expect them to be when her career prior to Rated R had been established on the fact that she was releasing these zippy, upbeat, pop tunes that had an undeniable likability factor. You are right, nobody paid attention to the statement, she did not captivate the public with Rated R, and I'm not sure I ever really expected her to be able to do those things because the Rated R era was not in line with the Rihanna that people came to grow and love during GGGB. There are artists like Gaga who can be innovative and have a huge impact, but they generally have more of an established image as an innovator as well as a very established fan following. Rihanna has had neither of those things throughout her career.
Either way, I do agree with you to an extent. Only Girl is a huge leap away from Rated R and is an attempt to cash in on a trend in popular music and get another big hit, but I will continue to maintain that, for all of it's similarities to other hit songs, Only Girl has a sound that does make it stand out a bit on it's own. That said, you are correct in saying she will not be remembered as a pioneering force in the popularization of europop music.
I'm not even a huge fan of Only Girl so I don't really know why I'm trying to defend it so much.

"Rated R" failed because it was mismanaged. Her record label didn't have confidence in the artistic merit of that album and so it was sold on a false image. Releasing "Hard," "Rude Boy" and "Rockstar 101" as the follow-up singles misrepresented where the true brilliance of that album resided. Of course the album failed!
Look at the success of "Love The Way You Lie." I think people were ready to accept that side of Rihanna, but after the middling success of "Russian Roulette," they were never truly given the opportunity. I think, as a whole era, that image could have worked.
Anyways, now, she has no choice but to go back to her previous sound or she'll suddenly be seen as a "has-been." It was like a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom and this is what we get for it.

If anything, Rated R proved what so many people had been saying about Rihanna for so long - that she had a weak fanbase. I was extremely disappointed with how it charted, because I was a big fan of the record. I didn't buy the excuses that people were making for it. When I think about it sometimes I cannot fathom the total collapse in support she experienced in a short period of time. The singles from Rated R flopped badly, even Rude Boy the supposed mega smash didn't sell that many copies. The song is incredibly catchy, it topped the airplay charts, realistically there was no reason for it to not sell as much as her singles from GGGB. Before GGGB Rihanna had been very hit and miss, but it seemed as though she had turned over a new leaf and had finally built a solid fanbase. Like many artists before her, I thought she would have been able to experiment/progress without alienating those that she appealed to. It appears that in Rihanna's case, it's more about the song rather than the artist. People are purchasing her music because they like the song, not because they like Rihanna.
I actually like OG, I just think it's totally ridiculous to come out and say that she doesn't want to make a generic record when that's exactly what she's doing. There's nothing wrong with following a trend, it's what most people do, but she shouldn't make herself out to be above it all. Rihanna has not had as great of an influence in the industry as some of the people she labeled generic.
