I think that fighting games need as many characters as possible but on the flip side, Super Smash Bros is really knowing for its really well done balancing. SSBB was a bit less balanced, due to final smashes and tripping among other things but Sakurai wanted it to be more fun than competitive. And Critics noticed this (thank tha lord) and the whole singer player campaign was praised or hated, mostly praised. I think they'll find a great middle ground for SSB's and it'll be competitive but more fun than Melee . Plus 45 characters is amazing to me, sooner or later they'll run out of big characters a lot of people know.
They have SO many posible characters to use from Nintendo itself, i really hope they top 80. The game would be killer. they have worked for too long now on this project to not make it better.
And they have me so pressed about that announcement that the history mode wil radically change. ugh
