I'm not against a sad ending - this is a show that has proven time and time again that knows how to deal with poignant situations. But in my opinion, this is not what this story has been all about, it's not what really represents. For me, it's that after all the struggles and heart-breaks, sooner or later we'll all have that happy ending. And man - after 9 years, finding out that the Mother was dead all long would be such a downer. Plus, it just doesn't fit the tone of Future Ted's narration, so I hope there's a final twist planned.

Well, it kinda makes sense that The Mother is terminally ill. Why else would Tedd tell the story of meeting her to their children without her being next to him.

i read about this Dead Mother theory weeks ago, but i reeeeeally dint think they'd do it!! honestly, if they do this i will NEVER get over the show.. i want a forever happy ending for TED.. dont do it HIMYM!!

it never even hit me while watching the episode.. i came upon the clue right now when i entered this thread!!
when Ted suddenly starts crying and the mother rushes to change the topic, i really cant spin it any other way tbh..

Just started watching this series late last year but I'm all caught up now. This is like House all over again. Came late to the party and it's already ending for me. I'll be sad because I love everything about it even the fillers but the Barney and Robin thing made my life complete so it'll be bittersweet.

I like the mother the more I see her so that would suck but I was really confused when I saw that. I mean he was crying when he was sitting with her. So are they trying to say she's terminally ill? Or did that conversation even happen and he's just imagining her sitting there?

I started in August of last year and watched seasons 1-5 within like 3 weeks, but then I had to stop because I was away fall semester. But I literally just finished Vesuvius, and I ran into this thread.

This episode had me weeping a little bit! I don't think a season has gave me so many feelings like this one.

I'm kinda disappointed they didn't really progress the story line with this episode but for what did happen I'll let it slide. 3 more weeks until the series finale.
