Although her next pop era is all but guarenteed to have a #1 Lead Single, a re-invention is probably necessary for future success for the rest of the decade. It doesn't have to be huge. However, a slight but distinct change in sound (such as a house record) would be beneficial for public interest, commercial interest, and for my little stan heart.

I think she will have more LL and WOA sounds on the next album. Which would kind of be good from the GP's POV because it'll be seen as a bit of a change as they weren't singles.

But honestly I don't understand what it is about ATRL's obsession with "dark" music... it's not in line with Katy's music and I'm generally not a fan of darker songs anyway. I don't listen to music to feel sad, and I certainly don't listen to Katy to feel sad.

Well if Katy were to go "dark" for an era, it would be a complete reinvention which would be very risky but could be very rewarding.

If Katy wants to be in this for the long haul, she should be able to do something different without alienating her audience. If she stays in the happy go lucky route, people may support her for a while, but there's only so much you can do the 'schtick' wearing thin or without beginning to recycle ideas.

Damn right! I don't want Katy to perform songs that put her in a depressed state of mind for 2 years straight. It's just not 'Katy'. The whole point of PRISM was optimism in a time of darkness, which I personally loved.

However, I do love Katy's songs about loss: Wide Awake, TOTGA, Lost. But she really 'won' the past few years so I don't think she has many recent experiences of that.

If dark means a bit more sexy/liberated similar to Beyoncé in her 30s then hell yeah!

^ They may have included the Katy Perry (official) music channel which has over 300M views, or they may have just included the official lyric videos for NLTM+ET+Firework+CG+TD which add up the difference, or maybe Pre-Vevo Views or maybe features? They're not all VEVO views though.

Regardless of what direction she goes for, I hope that there's a change in the presentation of the album. She could do what Prism was meant to do and make a double disc album with House/Upbeat songs on one, and Hip/Hop/More Introspective/DarkerThemed songs thereby making more of her fans happy and doing something a bit more left of centre.

If Rihanna is at 6.999B on YouTube, she'd have already reached 7B on VEVO anyway, as VEVO has more views than YouTube, let's just get that clear.

Katy's YouTube is at 5.958B views. This is with 88 videos. As VEVO has more views, it's safe to assume that Katy has reached 6B on VEVO with those 88 videos (this is an underestimation, it's likely closer to 6.1B). However, on VEVO she has 105 videos. That's a difference of 17 videos. I'm not quite sure what all of them are, but some of them are:

I Kissed A Girl
Hot N Cold
Thinking Of You
Thinking Of You (Extended)
Waking Up In Vegas
Waking Up In Vegas (Remix)
California Gurls
Making of CG (5 minute)
Making of CG (30 minute)

Adding these, we get an additional 912,601,727 views.

Therefore it wouldn't be inaccurate to assume that the views from the 88 videos on Katy Perry's YouTube channel + the views from the videos only on Katy's VEVO channel would be over 7B, as 6.1 + 0.9 = 7.0. Again, these are rough underestimations, so she is over 7B.

Rihanna still would have achieved this first (I'm assuming), so there's not really much to lose here. Both ladies win.
