I heard they were icicles, but with a mutation of foam snow, that gave it the apperance of ice cream. Similar to Grimer and Muk.
I actually like Vannilite, I think its adorable. I don't like its other two evolution lines though. I think they could have come up with something much more creative.

You know you could just play Fire Red or Leaf Green, the remakes of the first games. Red/Blue were cute for their time, but it really only holds nostalgic value
FR/LG give you everything from R/B, but better graphics and more stuff to do. Leaf Green is in my trinity of Pokemon games along with Soul Silver, and Pearl
