Listening to BN now. Probably going to give it a couple more listens before writing up a review.

After these two are done, I request we do Wildfire.
And maybe we can do Out of the Woods as a single.

"I miss my home / But there's a fire burning in my bones" horrifically cliche'd and creatively drained lyrics like this are just one of the horcruxes for an album plagued by lifeless and unidentifiable singer-songwriter pop.
Platten's songwriting style can be broken down into two parts: forced rhymes and disconnected imagery; the latter mystically leading people to the belief that Platten is somehow an original and half-decent lyricist. She shamelessly indulges in overdone lines and images: "I'm a lion, I'm a tiger / I'm a caged-bird, I'm on fire." Make no mistake, just because this 34-year-old writes her own songs doesn't mean she has a sliver of the maturity, wisdom and sensibility as any 16-year-old slam poet in the country.
Over-produced, bland pop productions try but fail to hide the faults of the lyricism. Each song stuffs as many elements of 2015 Adult Contemporary and Top 40 Mainstream production as possible; from fluttering synths in "Angels in Chelsea" to the bombastic drums that can be found in almost every single track, there's nothing redeemable on the album that one couldn't find in a ten second snippet of any Sia song. Even worse, the album offers the 47th rip-off of Sara Bareilles' "Brave" that we've heard since it's 2013 release: "Stand By You."
"Fight Song" may have been a guilty pleasure with it's easily memorizable lyrics and melody, but you're better off staying as far away from this album and likely anything else Platten has to offer in the future.
Overall: 1.8/10

As if Stronger had original lyrics, but wait, she didn't write it. I mean, "Wildfire" is not the best pop album, but you can feel Rachel singing it. She worked so hard on it, I don't think you can treat it so bad...

What on earth does Kelly and "Stronger" have to do with my review? Did I mention it anywhere in my review? No? Exactly. What a pathetic attempt at a drag.
Just because someone works hard on something doesn't automatically make their product "good." That's the reality of art and the music business. I respect Platten's work ethic, her effort and her as a person but that doesn't instantaneously grant her a positive review.

Mezik's Album Review ATRL Top Critic
73 | Cam - 'Untamed'
Still riding high off of the success of her breakthrough single. 'Burning House', the country-starlet released her debut album showcasing that she has much more to offer country music than a well written lead single. Built on themes of love, loss and learning to follow your dreams, the majority of the work on 'Untamed' gives the listener a deeper insight on Cam's life, and the five-year project that resulted in the release of the album.
The opening track on the album, which is also the title-track, is a fiery opener that preaches about learning to not live to rule and have a little fun once and while. The next two tracks, 'Hungover on Heartache' and 'Mayday', both explore Cam in her more vulnerable moments on the album. Initially, both tracks may appear to have the same topic, but 'Hungover on Heartache' explores the feelings one has when a relationship ends and how it is not always fine even though we try to tell ourselves it is whereas 'Mayday' is giving warning to someone about a relationship that will not work before they even enter it. Further along the album, past the beautiful 'Burning House', comes the promotional single, 'My Mistake', which is a fun and lively ode to recognizing that we are all responsible for the mistakes we make however, they will be learning experiences. One of the more interesting tracks on the album, 'Country Ain't Never Been Pretty', almost takes jabs at all the glamorized stars in pop music who are more materialistic than genuine. In this interesting comparison, Cam makes a bold statement that country artists will always be more real and personable than the overwhelmingly majority of today's pop stars. Closing the album is the gorgeously penned, 'Village', which came to life after the passing of her good friend's brother. In the song she reminds not only her friend, but all of us, that everyone who leaves us will always be with us in our heart as it is a village that holds the memories, and relationships, of everyone who cares and looks after us.
Overall, is an autobiography about Cam's journey, and the lessons she's learned along the way. The strengths in the album are the strong and relatable lyrics, that are the perfect balance of serious self-reflections, and quirky-foot-stomping country. As well, Cam has a way with her voice that really shines in the softer moments on the album where she is truly the most vulnerable. With such strong lyrics, the producers did an excellent job at ensuring that the production did not take away the attention from Cam's voice or lyrics being sung and work perfectly to compliment each other. It will be exciting to see how Cam's future in country music unfolds, and if her next album will be able to top an already strong, cohesive, debut album that set the bar high for not only her, but future musicians wanting to break into the country scene. |
