But yeah I think they are, even though one focuses on dancing while the other focuses on entertaining. When you look at their original strategies though, albeit generic for pre-2010 k-pop, both followed the same pattern of R&B -> electropop.

It's kinda like the SNSD/2NE1 situation.
One debuted 2 years before the other and 2NE1 is more sonically closer to f(x) (and debuted closer too) but they still get compared to SNSD

Hmm, yeah I never thought of the SNSD/2NE1 comparisons that way, but it is kind of silly when you put it in that perspective.
I've never thought of the TVXQ/BB comparisons either. I agree though that there isn't really an SM counterpart for Big Bang, which I guess is kind of lucky.
