I'm gonna be honest, I don't get the "this is not a pop album" narrative. It's definitely a pop album. All her albums have been, Cheek to Cheek being more traditional pop than the others. Like yes, there's some genre mixing and experimentation here and there but I don't really see where this album veers away from pop.

fair enough, she's allowed to mix it up! but what's TRULY weak here is that she thought that in order to serve authenticity she had to abandon anything that sounds electronic or dance, start playing the guitar, and affect a fake country twang. as many reviewers noted, her decision to completely change her sound with this album in order to feel more authentic is basically the most inauthentic thing she could have done
like it's fine to like the album - I like it too - but I'm getting sick of people acting like anyone who wants her to do dance music is wanting her to regress. she can still be progressive, stripped back, and authentic while making dance music

I don't ever recall her calling this "authentic music" and I'm pretty sure she corrected some radio DJ who said this is who she really is as supposed to her other stuff. She even hinted at her singing about her life experiences on Joanne just like she always did with her music, sing her very early days.
She started playing/learning guitar during artpop. I dont ever recall her using any fake country accent or twang.
The problem is YOU want to see this as her "desperately pandering to the gp/faking it/pulling this authenthic music ********" as supposed to accepting the fact that the experiences/progression that happened that lead to her making this album occurred organically....naturally.
