Because the album was released a YEAR later since you wanna act like you don't realize.
If Gaga released ARTPOP a year after Applause her album would've did like 95K first week. This applies to any act who pushes their album back a YEAR after their hit.
If she released it when it was hot she could've easily did double that with promo thrown in (MIAM received no promotion at all during the album's release but a 15 minute CBS special, and a World Music Awards performance which didn't air when the award show got cancelled).
She still released another single a few months before the album
Living For Love literally did not chart (as many have emphasised) yet RH did more than 3 times what MIAM did first week...
Rebel Heart has also outsold Kelly Clarkson's album which had a moderate hit WW by ~500k...
if you don't live here you can't tell someone who lives there how much of a hit something was.

Sorta but I was the big reason why. She bought one of Celine's CDs for me since I was soooo in love with My Heart Will Go On when I was, like, more or less a toddler.
Hung Up is more global than any Moo song ever. But so are the rest of Madonna's iconic hits.
Idek why Mariah fans even bother arguing that she's more iconic that Madonna. Madonna is known for being an entertainer, Mariah has been known for the past few years as being an embarrassment (lip syncing, her divorce, not managing to sing remotely as good live as Kathryn, etc.)
I knew who Mariah was when I was younger and knew a few of her songs but I had no idea she was as commercially successful as she was. I always thought she was on the same level of success as Jessica Simpson or something.
I know Madonna isn't repeating her past success, but she's still doing well with her tours, and she very much has a legacy and an impact. Y'all do too much and try to deny it as if she's never had an impact and that it still doesn't resonate today, which is totally delusional.

I'm sure if Rebel Heart spawned a single that peaked at #7 in US you'd be quick to bring up how much of a hit it was.
Mariah fans want to say Madonna's career is dead - watching Mariah is like watching one of those two legged races where they are forced to tie their feet together with their partner (aka Nick Cannon) but inevitably end up falling WAY before the finish line.
