I don't think it's that black and white. will.i.am is the equivalent of M. Night Shalyman. Both were respected for a brief moment in their respective careers, but now both of their names are like kryptonite to the general public. To the general public, will.i.am is considered pop (and rap) vitrol and M. Night Shalyman is considered box office poison (which is why Columbia Pictures
specifically made sure not to have his name featured anywhere in the promotion for "After Earth.")
Granted, as you've already mentioned, if the song is good, then the public will respond accordingly -- but if the song is subpar,
and worse, if will.i.am is all over the promotion for this song, the public will immediately reject it. "Scream & Shout" was a success because the production was great and Britney Spears' lines were infectious and repeat-worthy, but let's not act like the general public was repeating any of will.i.am's verses or even REMEMBERS will.i.am's verses, seeing as 95% of his lyrics in his discography are disposable and not worth remembering. If I were RCA, I'd take a big note from Columbia Pictures and keep will.i.am's name OUT of the general public's consciousness when promoting "Britney Jean" and its future singles.
