The years 2000 - 2009 were full of exciting new music and various cultural phenomenons. Though it was difficult to define an entire decade using just three songs, The Royalty eventually came up with a trinity of songs that we believe truly represent not only music, but popular culture during the 2000s. The following three tracks represent the three main trends in music throughout the decade.
I'm doin' this tonight,
You're probably gonna start a fight.
I know this can't be right.
Hey baby come on,
I loved you endlessly,
When you weren't there for me.
So now it's time to leave and make it alone
I know that I can't take no more
It ain't no lie
I wanna see you out that door
Baby, bye, bye, bye...
Bye Bye
Don't wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
You may hate me but it ain't no lie,
Baby, bye, bye, bye...
Bye Bye
Don't really wanna make it tough,
I just wanna tell you that I had enough.
It might sound crazy,
But it ain't no lie,
Baby, bye, bye, bye
(Oh, Oh)
Just hit me with the truth,
Now, girl you're more than welcome to.
So give me one good reason,
Baby come on
I live for you and me,
And now I really come to see,
That life would be much better once you're gone.
I know that I can't take no more
It ain't no lie,
I wanna see you out that door
Baby, bye, bye, bye...
Bye Bye
Don't wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
You may hate me but it ain't no lie,
Baby Bye, bye, bye...
Bye Bye
Don't really wanna make it tough,
I just wanna tell you that I had enough (ooh ooh)
It might sound crazy,
But it ain't no lie,
Baby, bye, bye, bye
I'm giving up I know for sure
I don't wanna be the reason for your love no more
Bye Bye
I'm checkin' out
I'm signin' off
Don't wanna be the loser and I've had enough
Don't wanna be your fool
In this game for two
So I'm leavin' you behind
Bye, bye, bye...
I don't wanna make it tough (wanna make it tough)
But I had enough
And it ain't no lie (Bye, bye baby...)
Bye, Bye
Don't wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two (I don't wanna be your fool)
But it ain't no lie
Baby bye, bye, bye...
Don't really wanna make it tough (don't really wanna make it tough),
I just wanna tell you that I had enough (that I had enough).
Might sound crazy,
But it ain't no lie,
Bye, bye, bye
The first main trend that occurred at the beginning of this decade was the bubblegum/teen-pop sensation. During the first few years of the 2000s, young new artists and groups dominated the music scene. Artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, along with boybands like 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, were constantly at the top of the charts. The Royalty chose "Bye Bye Bye" to represent this "teen-pop" era because it perfectly represents the sound, visual aesthetic, and type of artist that was commercially successful in the early 2000s.

Our team selected "Lose Control" by Missy Elliot to represent the second main musical trend of the 2000s; the urban takeover. During this period, hip-hop and R&B influenced songs and artists dominated mainstream music. This period was one of great experimentation in production and sound, which is perfectly exemplified by Missy's genre-defying anthem. This song also features the perfect example of an R&B/pop crossover star, Ciara.

Lyrics
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh, la, la
Want your bad romance
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh la la
Want your bad romance
I want your ugly, I want your disease
I want your everything as long as it's free
I want your love
Love, love, love, I want your love
I want your drama, the touch of your hand
I want your leather studded kiss in the sand
I want your love
Love, love, love, I want your love
(Love, love, love, I want your love)
You know that I want you
And you know that I need you
I want it bad, bad romance
I want your love, and I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
I want your love, and all your love is revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh la la
Want your bad romance
I want your horror, I want your design
'Cause you're a criminal as long as you're mine
I want your love
Love, love, love, I want your love
I want your psycho, your vertical stick
Want you in my rear window, baby, you're sick
I want your love
Love, love, love, I want your love
(Love, love, love, I want your love)
You know that I want you
And you know that I need you
('Cause I'm a freak, baby)
I want it bad, bad romance
I want your love, and I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
I want your love, and all your love is revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Oh, caught in a bad romance
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh la la
Want your bad romance
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh la la
Want your bad romance
Walk, walk, fashion, baby
Work it, move that thing, crazy
Walk, walk, fashion, baby
Work it, move that thing, crazy
Walk, walk, fashion, baby
Work it, move that thing, crazy
Walk, walk, passion, baby
Work it, I'm a freak, baby
I want your love, and I want your revenge
I want your love, I don't wanna be friends
J'ai ton amour et je veux ton revenge
J'ai ton amour, I don't wanna be friends
No, I don't wanna be friends
(Oh, caught in a bad romance)
I don't wanna be friends
Want your bad romance
(Oh, caught in a bad romance)
Want your bad romance
I want your love, and I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
I want your love, and all your love is revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
Want your bad romance
(Oh, caught in a bad romance)
Want your bad romance
Want your bad romance
(Oh, caught in a bad romance)
Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah
Roma, roma, ma
Gaga, ooh la la
Want your bad romance
Lastly, Lady Gaga's iconic hit "Bad Romance" was chosen to showcase the third and final musical "era" in the 2000s: dance-pop. From about mid-2007/early 2008 to the end of the decade, the airwaves and iTunes charts were dominated by what ATRL likes to call "pop girls". Female stars who made catchy and upbeat dance tracks, like Gaga,Ke$ha, and Rihanna were the most commercially successful during this period. The video for Bad Romance also shows how the end of this decade saw a rise in importance of social media (particularly YouTube) in the music industry.
Overall, the 2000s were a decade full of immense musical and cultural diversity. This is showcased by the transition of mainstream sound from teen-pop to urban-influenced to dance-pop. The Royalty believed that these three songs represent the 2000s as the musically rich decade that it truly was.

2000-2010: Recapturing the Decade
The new millennia marked the start of an era where the fusioning of genres triumphed over the creation of new styles. Because of this, a good majority of the songs have gotten lost in the battle for relevancy. However, there are the select few songs that have risen above the clutter of the 2000s and will forever remain as the defining sounds of the first decade of the new millennia, not just as memorable songs, but because of what each of the songs transcended.
The first half of the decade was ruled, and I mean RULED, by a small little television show called Friends. For ten incredible seasons, six actors gave life to one of best scripted TV shows to ever grace the small screen. With each episode came the infamous 46 second theme song (later re-recorded as a full length song due to popular demand) that became synonymous with the name of the show itself. Being on the radio and TV simultaneously, the song was inescapable during the first half of the decade and is still heard today with the re-runs on various networks.
The 2000s ushered in an age where popular musicals were revived and revamped to fit onto the big screen. Everything from Chicago to Rent, Moulin Rouge to Dream Girls was reworked and each one of them re-gained their popular statuses. However, a rehash wasn't enough. *Enter the mid 2000s* Breaking box office records around the world, Wicked proved just how parched the public was for a fresh new musical. With the economic recession around the world, this powerful song of freedom became the standout track and best encapsulated the overall essence of the musical and the public's desire to escape their real life stresses through song.
What's music without a little dance? The first decade of the 2000s gave rise to dance fads like the "Stanky Leg," the "Soulja Boy" and of course the "Fist Bump," but nothing came close to the signature dance moves from the Single Ladies video. Dominating the latter end of the decade and inspiring countless of covers, notably the SNL parody, the song was nothing short of brilliant. The song is elevated and forever solidified in history with the "whoa-oh -oh" hand flipping dance that every single women, gays and the occasional straight men *cough Obama cough* love busting out.
