One of the most acclaimed R&B stars of the decade, Janelle Monae has mesmerized critics with her genre blending songs, and eccentric live performances. Her signature pompadour and tuxedo gives her a unique look that makes her stand out from the ordinary singer. Although she put out a few LP's throughout the 00's, she only really started getting attention with the release of her conceptual album "The ArchAndroid", which she received massive acclaim and attention for with it's fusion of jazz, funk, electronic and folk influences to name a few. The lyrical content focuses on the fictional story of an android named "Cindi Mayweather" and the journey she goes on, yet the real message of the album deals with different social issues we are going through nowadays. Since then she has released a follow up called "The Electric Lady" and is continuing to have such success with the critics. Although she has yet to fully breakthrough to the public (unless you count a feature on a certain #1 song where she says a substantial 4 words), she has a devoted fan base, and support from some of her biggest heroes such as Prince and Stevie Wonder, and even the President himself. Human or android, gay or straight, whatever she is, there's no doubt about one thing: she is one of a kind.
I don't mind her being here, but maybe at number #99. How can she be above Tori Amos, Sade, James Brown, Dusty, or Mary J. Blige?
Many people probably voted for her based on that hook that she sang on that horrible fun. song and/or to pretend that they like "indie" artists. Chile, please. GTFO, indeed.
I feel like all these artists deserve to be here, but the arrangement is terrible. If you did this ten years from now, I don't think Janelle would be anywhere near the top 100.
