Oop, poor Sia, Ed and Tove Lo I like all 3 of them.
Sia's good, a tad overrated but still nice. Ed is also significantly overrated but I can't hate him (outside of the Games section.) Tove Lo has the amazing album to back herself up so she definitely deserved to smash.
Hope you can do that list. Should be very interesting.
Sorry, I try and keep my dislike to myself usually. I just needed to vent for a bit...

I purposely didn't listen to Sia's album because of her antics this year.
I mean, performing everywhere turned away from the audience, or with a paper bag on her head or whatever?
That's not artistry, that's just annoying, pretentious behavior,
Maybe I can listen to Sia's album someday, but not anytime soon. Especially not after she shaded Avril Lavigne as well
Sia is a damn good songwriter though, I like a lot of songs that she's written.
I like Ed Sheeran as a songwriter too, I think The A Team is one of his best songs, but I don't like Thinking Out Loud and I don't understand why it's smashing so effortlessly
I love Tove Lo I just really connect with the message of that song and her style of writing overall; loss is a hard thing to write about and I think Tove captured that hopeless, lost feeling perfectly. I think she's brave for writing something like that, and I haven't found a single flaw in her discography (so far) either. I agree that her lyrics can be off-putting, but that's what I like about them. They're meant to shock and make some people uncomfortable; but I do think she's genuine. As far as I know, she's written all of her songs (and some songs for other artists, like "Something New" by Girls Aloud and "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding; also songs for Ella Eyre, Cher Lloyd, and Lea Michele).
EDIT: I just thought of this comparison,
Habits (Stay High) is kinda like Bourbon In Kentucky,
Both have lyrics that promote destructive ways to get over someone
Habits (Stay High)
You're gone and I gotta stay
High all the time
To keep you off my mind...
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you babe
I fall back down
vs.
Bourbon In Kentucky
But there ain't enough
Bourbon in Kentucky
For me to forget you
No there ain't enough
Bottles I could drink
To make 'em feel as empty as I do
I agree, but Give Me All Your Luvin was my #17 song of 2012, so
Girl Gone Wild and Masterpiece charted on my Top 100 that year, too
I actually liked her MDNA album. I'm not sure how I feel about Rebel Heart yet, but I do feel she's basically maturing in reverse. At least in Madonna's case, she's choosing the wrong singles and the wrong way to promote.
"Masterpiece," "I ****ed Up," and "Falling Free" are examples of good songwriting on Madonna's last album.
Masterpiece is actually pretty nice, imo:
If you were the Mona Lisa
You'd be hanging in the Louvre
Everyone would come to see you
You'd be impossible to move
It seems to me is what you are
A rare and priceless work of art
Stay behind your velvet rope
But I will not renounce all hope
And I'm right by your side
Like a thief in the night
I stand in front of a masterpiece
And I can't tell you why
It hurts so much
To be in love with the masterpiece
Cause after all
Nothing's indestructible
I really appreciate the comment. I love that you had a strong opinion on this and that you left detail here.
I have listened to each of these artists extensively and got my opinioin that way. I reviewed Sia's album for atrl citic. If you ever have some spare time, you can always go through there and check out what we all gave it. I just didn't care for it at all.
I think I might just dislike Ed
I see Bourbon and Habits differently. Bourbon is wistful, and he's not saying that he's going to and does need all the bourbon in Kentucky whereas Tove literally talks about staying high all the time. She actually does the action and shows no desire to change, whereas Dierks is pained and hurt sounding.
Actually, thank you for posting MDNA stuff. I liked chunks of that album, especially Falling Free and Masterpiece. Falling Free is beautiful, and Give Me All Your Luv if fun, I just am really turned off recently. I also think that her negatives far outweigh her goods. But, I like your taste overall

But FKA
Ugh, I know she's beloved, but I honestly feel that she's all production. As soon as the next arty girl comes along, Twigs will be forgotten I think. There's not much there besides smoke and mirrors I think.

NOOOOOO TOVE LO
Bloooooooomers what the heck
I couldn't resist. I'm sorry!
Sorry, I genuinely dislike those artists. They make me see Red. (buy Red on iTunes)

Till the World Ends is amazing though Better Dig Two and Bourbon In Kentucky
iTunes had (might still have) a free single by Guster earlier this week that I liked
C'mon and Motivation Gaga, Luke Bryan, and XXXO by M.I.A.
Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Tinashe
Please don't hold the lack of Avril against me. I did root for Cassadee on the voice though. I just haven't listened to her album.
I love Guster I thought iTunes was canceling that. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

So Amaloner is not the only one that has a fear of Sia. Attacking her songwriting skills. Clever. Her not showing face has me even want to take a look at it more. Don't you f**k with Ed like that. I guess he's the singer that you have been thinking of. You're saying Ed is taking the easy route to sound good and autheic with the way he does music, but it's all a trap since it's nothing speical and a facade. I only heard Two Weeks and I liked so can't judge any futher. Tove Lo is our misery?! I never liked Madonna and her music so it's good she is here, but of course, you're going get hated on for this, but you know that. Good write-ups on those.
Mid-decade: For many songs, so little time. Gotta take a took. Adele is just wonderful, nothing fancy just pure simplicity music to be in awe at, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) better than most pop gurls ATRL worships, Better Dig Two is so good, like that TBB/Santi song, XO is pop wonderland, Countdown this countdown, Shutterbug is great, Calle 13 and Camila nice, I'm blown away because there's was something in the (Holy) water. A body party with CiCi-I;m there! But Brezzy says I couldn't get in. F**k You! Coldplay, what a song Touch is, I'm up all night to get lucky, Coming Home is wonderful esp. Skylar's voice, I'm latching onto Latch, Hold on We're Taking Care The Motto in 5AM because my Girls love Queen Bee. Em is the Rap God, Gorillaz are always good, Take Me to Life, Radioactive was my #1 last year, Janelle sounds wonderful in Cold War, having fun with the Tightrope while slowing down to have a Prime Time! Mirrors is the best out of the JT songs. Kanye has all that power to beg y'all for Mercy in Paris because he's the motherf**kin' monster of all of the lights. Yup! Only Nicki matters in Monster. The best thing she's done ever. I just like all the West songs. My teenage dream was always always to f**k naked Katy Perry and the California Gurls. Bitch, don't kill King Kendrick's vibe. Swimming Pool (Drank) is anything you wanted to be. Like all the Gaga songs except Marry the Night.
M.I.A, Midnight City is the f**King best, #Beautiful, Adorn is one of the best R&B songs out there recently-Pure music sex. Roman's Revenge is the best, but I'm looking ass and have Beez in the trap. Take a Walk is my fav song to take a walk and get my mind out of things, Give Me Smooth Sailing, Radiohead, We Pour Loveeeeeee, Dancing on My own, Soldier of Love-so good, Empire, Losing You is just amazing, Safe & Red Again, Tinashe's on fire! Rack City, bitch, Giving Up The Gun or you're Diane Young,
hit me with that Lotus FLower Bomb and 2chainz ain't different. Hearing parts of Impossible Soul and it's an interesting song.
Great stuff. You had a great Best of.
Thanks Flame for feeling my pain on Madonna. I get to be UNapologetic Bloom on that one right
Who isn't therefor a Body Party with Ci
Your Katy comment though
I'm hot and cold on marry the night, but I love that remix.
oh man, your Decade List is outstanding! So many great songs, and your few word comments are well-done. I could list so many, but my top favs from your list are "Better Dig Two" (yes!!! That was one of my top 10 singles of 2012!), the Baroness songs, Beastie Boys, Best Coast (you are so right that "The Only Place" may as well be the Cali state anthem. I think I said the same thing in my write-up at the time), the two Big Boi songs, Daft Punk (thanks for singling out "Touch" in particular. Paul Williams!!!), Dierks, Drake, El-P, Foos, Gorillaz (R.I.P. Bobby Womack), all the Kanye and Killer Mike songs, Lady Gaga (indeed, Clarence's solo is what makes "Edge of Glory"), Mastodon, Nicki (yes on "Stupid Hoe"!!), PJ Harvey, Queens, Radiohead, RTJ, U2, VW, Walkmen (co-sign on "rock's most underrated band." A buddy of mine said a couple years ago that their discography was the greatest of the '00s for a band. I can't go that far, but they are in the discussion, without a doubt). Zac Brown (love the Mike Judge-directed video! Also have high hopes for their 2015 album, as they are working with Jay Joyce, the genius).
And excellent Song of the Decade pick! I really undervalued Age of Adz when it came out, and I regret it. Looking forward to HIS 2015 album, as well!
Albums of the Decade list is great! so many to list, but the ones I adore are Morning Phase, Up on the Ridge, Sir Lucious, Camino, Black , Riser, the Drake and Kanye, RTJ/Killer Mike, VW, Walkmen, and CASTLEMANIA!! I NEED SEED! The Whipping Continues! If I Stay Too Long! So many all-time great Dwyer songs on there.
Again, very impressed with your year-end. I mean, what other list has tons of big pop/altrock albums, as well as Thee Oh Sees and Baroness? You can't name them! Great, great job, and I look forward to seeing the 2015 list later this year!
Wow, "Impossible Soul." What a song. I'm so glad I was able to discover it through your recommendation. It's unlike anything I've ever heard.
I love how you write about music, by the way. Your observations are so astute. Whether it's music you love or hate, you know exactly why and you convey it so clearly.
Please don't hold the lack of Avril against me. I did root for Cassadee on the voice though. I just haven't listened to her album.
I love Guster I thought iTunes was canceling that. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
Avril can be abrasive, I completely understand I've just stanned for her since 2002
Try to listen to Cassadee's album in 2015! It's called Frame By Frame, it has some really good tracks
From Cassadee's album, I would recommend "11," "Easier to Lie," and "You Hear a Song."
There's a new free section on iTunes, they just replaced the old one!
I love your "least favorite artists of 2014" list. You completely eviscerated 3 of my top 40 albums (FKA Twigs, Tove Lo, and Sia, the latter 2 of which were in my top 5!! So obviously I disagree, but you made your case well). And yet, without reading that post, I never would've known you hated them, because you listened to the instructions that I enshrined into the "Best of" pages about 5-6 years ago, "Be supportive! No shade or negativity, period." That, along with your general support of my year-end review, your thoughtful comments, and your own insightful writing and reviews, is why you're my favorite new ATRL member. It was nice to meet you, and have a great 2015!
