I don't care about the fact that it's covered, I don't live in the US so I am not the one paying for it, but I believe that there are more important things that should be covered before this.

Personally I think medicare should only cover necessary medical procedures. I have no problem with people getting sex changes but if medicare is going to cover sex changes than they might as well cover things like plastic surgery too.

i've seen this argument before and it's inherently flawed because disliking the way you look isn't the same as being born the wrong gender and doesn't cause people the same amount of anguish that being transgender does

not only that but disliking the way you look is usually caused by a bad self image and won't be fixed just by changing one thing, because a lot of the time people who already dislike themselves will just find something new to dislike after that thing is changed

i can't believe there are seriously people here who are complaining about "taxpayer money" being spent when most of you aren't even poor enough to care that much where your taxes are going, and I bet half of you don't pay taxes at all

if you hate wasting taxpayer money so much go complain about the money being spent on wars or something, not about a small section of a program that won't even use that much money compared to the amounts spent on things like social security damn

It isn't personally relevant to me. But how many people in this thread are transgendered? How many people in this thread also aren't from the U.S? Are they too not able to engage in this conversation?

China pretty much owns America at the moment. The only competitive advantages the U.S. really has in its economy right now is the film industry and the industrial military complex. I don't want to see America receiving international investment simply to finance another war. I'd rather they minimise they debts through decreasing their expenditure. As an elective surgery I don't really think it's something that the rest of the country should have to pay for. Especially when the state of healthcare and education are so low. They're spending money they don't have, and there's so many other things that should be spent on first imo.

Like $400 per person per year less. And the fact that Australia is also in a enormous amount of debt doesn't change the fact that America is too. The new Australian government just announced its new budget and there are so many cuts, particularly to the sick, pensioners and students. They're decentralising our university system, so college fees will now go from like $24,000-$30,000 a degree up to $130,000 a degree. This is all so they can pay off our debt. I'm not transphobic and I definitely see being transgender as being a pre-existing medical condition (with an elective surgery that many will opt for) I just don't think the government should be paying for it given their current economic climate. Save it until the economy is stronger. Especially when there are so many single mothers working 3 jobs on minimum wage just to make ends meet and feed their kids. Poverty in the States is ridiculous. The money should go towards that before it goes towards sex-changes.

You could argue that somebody who wants to get plastic surgery was also "born in the wrong body" because they were born with the "wrong" nose.

Being transgender is also caused by self image because you see yourself as somebody who you weren't born as.
