Some people try so hard, it's kinda sad...
Hard is doing amazing, top 40 on pop radio and top 40 on the airplay chart
Rude Boy, Fire Bomb, or Rockstar 101 should be the next single. She needs to stay away from Stupid In Love, I love it, but it's not single material.

I can't handle the ignorant ****s trying to say Rihanna should be selling amazingly well because she had X amount of promo from the 20/20 interview, the abuse incident itself, and performing. While the incident with Chris Brown and the subsequent 20/20 interview may have made many people sympathize with Rihanna and won her new supporters, those new supporters aren't necessarily new fans of the new music, thus they aren't going to rush out and buy her new album, particularly when Rihanna's success with GGGB was based on the fact that the songs were infectious dance pop tracks that appealed to everyone and were destined to be hits, regardless of who was singing them. Rated R is something a little different, and while the critics realize that this album has a little more to do with artistry and less to do with commercial appeal than her previous work, the haters think that she should be dominating the charts based on her name and reputation as a hit maker alone. The simple fact is that Rated R isn't the sort of accessible pop music the fickle pop audiences crave, Russian Roulette isn't the sort of single that smashes in 2009, and this album wasn't produced with the intention of reformulating GGGB's success. Accept that Rihanna has produced some outstanding and insightful material with this album and that she has (for the time being) veered away from the typical dance/pop route that gave her multiple hits. Every single from this album can flop, and she can sell a total of 4 copies worldwide, but I guarantee that if Rihanna comes back with an album full of bouncy pop tracks ala GGGB she'll be back on top and you'll be bitching about her owning the charts like you did through all of 2007-2008.

The risk in this album is that the songs are pretty candid about her life and go a bit deeper than the "tonight's my night, i'm gonna break it down at the club, keep playing my song" type tracks that tend to dominate the charts. What other mainstream pop artist has released an album this year that is as insightful and candid as Rated R? Rihanna took a risk by sharing a bit of her soul and not giving us another Please Don't Stop the Music, which would have been a guaranteed smash because it's something she's already explored and had success with.

This post is so beautiful and true
I'd be embarrased to say something negative after getting dragged like this

Of course you focus on only the most accessible tracks on the album, or the sections of those songs that do resort to typical pop track cliches. Of course they're going to throw in some typical pop gimmicks that everyone loves, because this is an album from a mainstream artist competing in the realm of pop music, but don't act as though those brief moments are representative of the entire album or override the significant portion of lyrics that give some perspective into her life.
