I loved XII and will always defend it
imo the only thing "killing" FF is Square's inability to release main titles in a timely fashion. They're doing this with Kingdom Hearts as well. So much time spent on sequels and spin-offs (though I imagine they're much cheaper to produce), changing directors mid-development, MMO titles that don't appeal to everyone, etc.
It's kind of mind-boggling that they've only managed to release 5 flagship titles over the last 15 years... 3 if you're like me and don't care for MMOs. The occasional dud of a game would be acceptable if they were released frequently, but Square hypes a game for years and years and then it disappoints...
I still have hope for FFV though. The battle system looks fun to me, which is a big part of the appeal.
