Why do people feel that Rihanna needs to write, produce and direct all of her music and videos? She contributed very little to her first 3 albums and they were successful. Why should she change her creative process just to please people who are going to hate her anyway?
And this is the point that most people are trying to make. She has little creative control, so does anyone really expect her to put out deep, meaningful music?
Her label has made it clear that they are here for the hits, and the public has made it clear that they don't use "deep Rihanna," hence the (under)performance of Rated R. She and her label know her bread and butter.
We could make threads like this for Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Britney and many others. In fact we have. But whats the point. We know what these artists do, and we just have to accept that.
At the end of the day, its about the music. If you dont like it than too bad. Personally, I dont feel Loud is generic. I feel you can play it straight through and its a great Pop album.
Thats my opinion, and I love Rihanna because she re-invents herself every era, ALWAYS has a diverse album and always has great tours.
Most people hate on her because she seems like she dosent really have control over her career. If she would be a little more creative and more hands on (I've used this so much in this thread ) I bet you theyd give her more respect.
But the thing is, the same people would still hate her if she did everything herself. She could write, record and produce her own album entirely on her own, and they would still find some way to discredit and/or insult her.
Just because its a club song doesnt make it the same as Only Girl. Thats like saying P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and others all have the same songs because they have a pop rock sound...
She shakes her hips in SOS. Where is the choreography?
Shaking hips > Walking around a field/Walking around New York/Walking around a Bedroom/Walking.
But she does more than "shake her hips" in that video. For you to even degrade the movement/engagement she puts on in "SOS" is quite ridiculous. Just to defend a toot & boot she does in "WMN?" performances today.
Refresh.
Tell me she is doing that today. Cause I see weak moves, while possibly intoxicated.

The public didnt make that clear...the only flop was Russian Roulette. Rockstar 101 also flopped and that wasnt deep. For all we know Fire Bomb or Cold Case Love could have been released, smashed and pushed the album to 2 million in the US....

They somewhat do. Kelly, Pink, Katy & Avril do or used to do very similiar music.

I don't think Loud is generic. It's certainly a COMMERCIAL album, but it can't really be specifically compared to any other album at all. Rihanna's music has it's own sound.
Loud just looks a bit generic for HER usual sound. Although I also remember how everyone was surprised by how it sounded. Everyone was expecting an album full of dancepop & only 2/11 tracks were actually dancepop. I certainly was surprised by how many midtempos there were - A LOT.
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm supposed to like that song now?
You liking the song or not is irrelevant, 'You lost me' (which Christina co-wrote) is a song that contains substance, an immense amount of substance. For you to say "Thank GOODNESS Rihanna would never make a song like that" is redundant, it shows Rihanna is incapable of doing so because she lacks depth. You made yourself look silly.
But how are Man Down, California King Bed, Cheers, Skin, and Whats My Name part of that 50 hr dance track?
Name a song before Only Girl that was like it on the radio by any female...
Man Down is fine. CKB= Boring Generic Ballad, Cheers isn't really anything new. SKIN= Trey Songz reject, WMN? = the same ester dean/stargate forumla trying to rekindle the Rude Boy esque success.
Only Girl is nice but it isn't innovative. European Influenced Dance tracks have been done before.(When Love Takes Over, etc)

Exactly. And no, people shouldn't expect that from her. People are so hellbent on comparing her career/creative process to other artists, so of course it seems like she contributes very little.
I wish more people would see the points you've just made, because you're right. Why do people expect her to change what she's been doing for 6 years now? It obviously works for her. And if/when she decides to have more creative input with her future albums, she will do it. In the meantime, she seems to genuinely enjoy recording and performing music that others write; and there's nothing wrong with that.

Rated R is her second lowest selling album after Music of the Sun. Her biggest hit from that album was "Rude Boy," gal.
