As I'm reading the thread, it only proves my theory on why I believe every stan of a "today's artist" needs to be well informed with an artist from yesteryear. Most people don't know much about Janet, just as they don't know much about anything about ANY artist from the past other than their sales and hits. But to clarify a few things:
- Janet's peers have NOTHING to do with HER popularity. From 1986 - 2004, Janet was popular all around the globe. Someone who was never huge doesn't sell in the excess of ~140mil records globally. They don't sell out on 6 of 7 continents, and selling out a stadium on each of them. Nor do they have double digit top 10 hits on various charts around the globe.
- Being overshadowed by another artist has NOTHING to do with Janet. Michael overshadowed Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, and Celine at one point, does that mean those artists were never huge? No. Stop making stupid comments.
- And for the sake of comparing, Janet has sold ~140mil records and has double digit top 10s across the globe with FIVE successful studio albums, count them, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Not 12 like Madonna. Not 10 like Mariah. Not 10 like Celine. FIVE.
- Janet's influence is present in all of her female peers - Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, and Celine.
- Every major music market has their version of "Janet Jackson", which is a testament of global appeal.
- She was huge to the point where Michael started copying her and Madonna was threatened by her.
- Janet's impact and influence is right on par, and nearly surpassing that of MJ and Madonna. Stop it.
- People try to write her off because of Superbowl. Mind you, it's now the only halftime show that matters.
- R&B music, at her time, was not HUGE internationally. Hence why she hasn't sold as much as her peers. She penetrated markets with that sound, and broke the barrier. So your faves have Janet to thank for allowing them to sell R&B across the globe.

I agree with all of this except 7 and maybe 4? I don't think her influence is as big as Michael's. I would say she's about up there with Madonna on influence.
I noticed a lot of people said she wasn't that big in Europe....but that's just one part of the world. Janet def isn't a local artist as some people were saying. Local artist don't tour the world AND be known around the world either. So BOOP. She probably wasn't as big around the world as Madonna or MJ, but that doesn't take away from the fact that she is a global superstar. LEGEND.

7 and 4 are TRUE. And I can provide receipts for all if need be. Her influence is up there with MJ and Madonna's. The fact that she influenced MJ speaks volumes.
Janet was big in Europe. Don't believe these **** ass people and their ignorance. You don't have 17 top 10s in the UK, the major music market in Europe, and sell out 34 dates across the continent on one tour and not be huge. "Together Again", "What Have You Done...", "That's The Way Love Goes", "All For You", "Scream" and others were all massive hits across the globe. Naysayers can use the argument that Janet's major markets were the US and Japan, the same could be said for someone like Madonna who barely toured Africa and Asia. Does that mean she's not big? PLEASE. These young kids don't know much about music and artists prior to 2000. Hence why they don't know ****.

And y'all mutha****as in here was acting like the UK didn't use her. Where is Ace? I want an explanation.

16/17 top 10s in the UK (depending on how you look at it), with FIVE albums. 1...2...3...4...5. She set fire to the world during her peak. She has charted very well across the globe. People can have their opinions, but the numbers don't lie.
The UK does use Janet. Hell they had to take down a billboard of her breasts because it was causing too many accidents. FOH.
