Janet in the late 80's and 90's was big in Europe. Love Will never Do Without You, Escapade, Thats The Way Love Goes, and especially TOGETHER AGAIN were huge international hits and in europe in the 90's.
Not to mentions her tour dates all sold out in Europe. ONLY reason Janet is not huge in Europe today is because she literally hasn't performed/promoted there since 1998 with her Velvet Rope Tour.
Seeing her 2 years ago on the x factor and such in england was a rare occasion. She probably hadn't performed on anything there since who knows when.

She's a Icon. She's not a legend and never will be. So many of you throw that word around too loosely.

Her influence is very heavy on Americans (black ones), she is not referenced when it comes to other races because Madonna outshined her so heavily. The same cannot be said for Beyonce, Rihanna, Whitney, or Diana.

Sure Michael had thriller, and Madonna had True Blue but they still slayed after their prime. Whitney fell harder than a bowling ball. Plus Whitney rarely changed her image, whitney couldnt dance, whitney never gave you an elaborate show with all the works, whitney didn't help redefine the music video. Whitney's business deals were the pits. Janet had all the bells and whistles.
Janet was more consistent to me.

Which makes it even more sad that Whitney is the more memorable one. Janet does not have a song as BIG and memorable as IWALY and its too late for her to have one now. She never had "that song" that took over the planet in impact and is undeniably iconic to EVERYONE and not just certain groups. The closest she came was Rhythm Nation and half of ATRL doesnt even know that, which proves my point.
In the 80's and 90s Janet had a chance to sell MAJOR albums like everyone else, she did not. Whitney has THREE best selling albums of all time, Madonna has THREE, Celine has FOUR, Mariah, Michael, EVERYONE but Janet, does it get any clearer? Beyonce is one of the best selling artists of (her time) and by a huge margin too, she is ahead of every other black female artist just like Whitney was in every area.

Beyoncé is a legend, that has been established many times over, by her contemporaries in Hollywood as well as her fans.

Before that, she was still very relevant, and after The Bodyguard she maintained success up until 2002. Whitney didn't fall that hard like you're saying. She declined just like every pop star, but she had an excellent reign.

By 1995 Janet was more of a force than Whitney was. Whitney was already going on her drug deep end. Janet did not become the highest paid female ever with her 80 million dollar record contract for nothing.
And outside of her voice what did Whitney truly do? She was never that special to me outside of her voice.
NOTHING she did was groundbreaking to me. She never even wrote her own songs. Her biggest song ever is a cover of someone else's work.

Then they did Kylie's Fever tour in 2002. They really knew their stuff, and never wasted time on lessors.

"established" in what sense? she's like what...thirty something years old? her music, albums or performances don't and will not stand the test of time like Madonna. You wouldn't even know because you're so quick to throw the title "legend" at her when she still has a long way to go.

The bigger shade is IWALY is someone else's song. While Janet's just as well known songs like Rhythm Nation, That's The Way Love Goes, and Escapade are all owned and written by Janet.
Janet will laugh all the way to the bank in the end.
Beyonce said it best,
"DIVA'S GETTING MONEY, IF YOU AIN'T GETTING MONEY THAN YOU AIN'T DOING NOTHING FOR ME"
RIP Whitney though.

IDK what you are cackling at but Whitney was a model before she was even a popular singer. Every body talked about how beautiful she was.... she never had plastic surgery to butcher her God given looks.
Her voice is acclaimed and iconic songs are acclaimed. Her vocal performances are acclaimed. When the last time Janet was acclaimed FOR ANYTHING other than her D List Nutrisystem commercials?

She might not be able to follow in his footsteps completely due to gender barriers, but she could've always tried to be a female version of him, like Janet was. That way it all comes full circle and the "Janet influence" you see in Bey could just be Michael's influence instead.
How has Janet eclipsed Diana & Whitney in name or celebrity? I don't agree with that.
Someone said before Janet there was Donna. I thought it was funny & completely weird that Whitney & Tina were skipped over in favour of Donna.
|
It's noted that way because Janet's influence is ALWAYS downplayed in favor of more overrated artists like MJ and Madonna (the shade is, Janet has influenced them both ). Like I said, when you assess them both, Beyonce has been more influenced by Janet than MJ regardless of what anyone says.
Janet has eclipsed Diana and Whitney because we use for more factors of being a pop star than hte ther two.

Where are the dance shows in honor of Janet? American Idol, X Factor and The Voice are all made looking for the NEXT Whitney not Janet. They sing Whitney's songs NOT Janet's. Every female since 1990 has Whitney as an influence from Mariah, Toni and Celine to Brandy, Monica and Christina to Lady Gaga, Rihanna and JoJo. I'M NOT HERE FOR FAIRYTALES, LIES & RUMORS!!!!! You gerls better get your life and SPEAK ****ING FACTS!!!
Janet being better than Diva Originale MY BLACK ASS!!!!! Am fuming over that MESS!!!!!!

I've been saying this for years.
You see how I Wanna Dance with Somebody, How Will I Know and Greatest Love of All sHOT back up in every European iTunes chart after Whitney's passing?
Yeah.
That's not happening for Janet when she goes.

I have to go with Whitney. Miss Jackson and Miss Knowles still aren't known much in many parts of the world.
