Overseas, though...it was immense. Whitney took the whole African continent by storm...and she didn't even tour there in the 80s. Her, MJ, Janet and Prince were extremely popular in Africa during the 80s. Can't say the same for other artists, though.

Yep. I didn't even know Madonna was as popular as she was until I came to America for a summer excursion in high school. Here she really isn't known at all. I guess it's just a regional thing?

Prince was pretty big in the early 80s from what my parents told me growing up. But then Whitney came and kind of edged him out with her first two releases.

MJ and Whitney were easily the two biggest acts of the 80s. Then Madonna, Prince, Bruce, and Janet. Although I feel Bruce may have been a bit bigger than Prince.

I LOVE Whitney and she's definitely one of the biggest female artists of ALL TIME but everyone knows that MJ/Madonna represented the 80's, period. They're inked in the textbooks. It's just downright stupid to say otherwise.

It was a huge event, but aside from PR , Prince's 80s albums are only one or two times platinum. Whereas with Whitney, the debut is 13x platinum and the follow up is 9x platinum.

That's nothing like that at all. Lauryn Hill released one album. Whitney released two albums in the 80s that BOTH sold over 20 million. She had seven consecutive #1 hits in that decade also. She won. You big mad or small mad?
