honestly though, "I disagree with the lifestyle but still respect them" basically just means they're a homophobe but don't want to fully admit it. If she disagrees with who you love and doesn't think that you should be treated equally under the law and lives her life according to a religion that says gays go to hell, how can she possibly respect you?

Why not? It's analogous to me not liking alcohol consumption for X, Y, and Z reasons but not actively engaging in any type of activity that restricts or impairs another's ability to consume it.

I live in a very conservative community filled with devout Christians who oppose gay marriage. There are some -- not all, and dare I say not even the majority -- who maintain this position while still interacting with gay people as warmly and friendly as anyone else. As friends, even.

they interact with them oh WOW what do they want, a medal? they don't believe gay people are as good as straight people or deserve equal treatment and equal rights, so them having the courage to "interact" with them means jack****. smiling in these people's faces while internally thinking that they shouldn't be treated like regular human beings

But (most) people are gay not by choice. That's like saying that you judge a group of people for drinking water yet everyone else who drinks water is okay.
