I love music videos with messages. Music Videos are indicative and reflective of the times in which it is made. In "Famous" Charli lambasts millenials and youth that grew up with technology as an intricate part of their lives. And honestly, rightfully so. The scariest part of the video is how accurate it is. I think that's why I like it so much, because it rings true. I think the scene that stands out to me the most is the part at the end when everyone crowds around the girl on the ground, and instead of helping her, they take pictures of her, blatant exploitation for hits. In our generation, that is the norm. We like to view everything through our phone. "Famous" has helped me put down the phone and embrace the real world.
Least Favorite Music Video #3 - Jordin Sparks: Double Tap [ft. Two Chainz]
-
I enjoy party music videos as much as the next person, but Jordin just can't seem to make it work. While watching, it doesn't make me want hang out with her or go to her party. I don't think her clothes look that good either. I just don't think she fits the heaux mold very well.
Stay tuned for tomorrow for my second favorite music video and my second least favorite music video!
#2 - Grimes: Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream
-
This music video took me back to my childhood when I wanted my life to be a music video. Claire Boucher's enthusiasm is what sells this to me. Her motions express the emotion of the song in such a powerful way, it makes me want to be with her. I love the various scenes and outfits. The lighting when she's on the basketball court looks really cheery. I really respect her integrity and vision. I also appreciate the amount of detail that went into the music video. All of it, however, is intensified by Grimes herself which is a sign of true artistry.
Least Favorite Music Video #2 - Becky G: Break a Sweat
-
The lyric video was more interesting than this lame music video. Becky's outfits and backdrops really don't mesh. I think the worst part of the video is when she's wearing cornrows and she's in front of a backdrop that looks like it cost $10 to throw together. Also, the parts where she's wearing blue light (or whatever that was) on half of her face isn't flattering at all. Her facial movements are really awkward. By the end of the video, I found myself staring at the backup dancers instead of Becky G. I just don't find her to be very original. Overall, the music video takes itself way too seriously and the excessive product placement is a huge turnoff.
Stay tuned for tomorrow for my favorite music video of the whole year and my least favorite music video!
As if this is a surprise. Hannah has stated that she wants her music to also be completely audiovisual. On "Hi" she makes good on this wish. When I first watched the video my breath was taken away in the climax of the song and video. It was an overload that triggered ASMR where the music and the flashing lights worked together as a symphony. Seriously, pure rush. I really like the use of the confetti throughout the video and the diamond. In general, I like her color palate and aesthetic. For her first music video she did a damn good job.
Least Favorite Music Video of 2015 - Madonna: Bitch I'm Madonna [ft. Nicki Minaj]
-
Madonna should know better. She's already perceived as a leech of everything and anything youthful. Therefore, it makes sense that she would siphon ideas from a younger star who made a similar music video one month earlier. I don't know if she had to do it because of Tidal or what, but if you're going to copy, at least do it better. Unfortunately, her posse wouldn't even show up. Not even her feature. I guess Rita Ora showed up, but who's helping who in that situation? There is nothing memorable about this music video, nothing revolutionary, just a cannibalized concept. The video parallels her career, it seems like she's struggling to keep up. For a star who used to make her own trends, the fact that she's desperately following them is just tragic.
yass, hannah deserves that #1 spot
well honestly bitch, i'm madonna shouldn't be taken that seriously, i mean it's a fun video sure, it's tacky as hell, but come on, there were way worse videos
#30 - KDA: Turn the Music Louder [ft. Tinie Tempah & Katy B]
I'm not a fan of Tinie Tempah's part, but Katy's ownage and slayage on her parts are what elevates this to a high position on my chart. Her vocals sound so powerful and confident that you can't ignore her. It makes me extremely excited for Honey.
#29 - Natalie La Rose: Somebody [ft. Jeremih]
Jeremih has the best part of this song, but it is insanely catchy and I do enjoy the instrumental.
#28 - MS MR: Criminal
This was the only decent song that MS MR released from the insanely bland "How Does it Feel". The vocals are the best part since it shows of what Lizzy's voice can do and it has a nice melody.
#27 - Carly Rae Jepsen: Warm Blood
Carly shines in the sexy track "Warm Blood." I like this song because it has an amazing beat and she really exposes herself. She also takes it to a lot of different places.
#26 - Jidenna: Classic Man [ft. Roman GianArthur]
I love Jidenna's message of being a gentleman and street at the same time. I also like what they did with the "Fancy" inspired beat. It was definitely a grower for me.
#25 - Janelle Monae: Yoga [ft. Jidenna]
I appreciate the new direction Janelle Monáe took with this song. A little more provocative than before, but just enough to make a bigger impact. The production sounds elastic, like how'd you want your body to feel if you were doing yoga. The chorus is my favorite part, going to new heights.
