It's not puzzling. It's no secret that straights are what gays aspire to be. I mean look at how gays treat "straight acting" gays from "femme" gays and that'll tell you all you need to know.

Straights are put on a pedestal so if a pop girl can successfully get straights on board, the gays on this forum will feel better about their fave. It's horrible but that's how it is

Probably because a significant majority of people are straight. The gay community often says "10% of people are gay" but no real statistics show that it's anywhere near this amount. Sure, it's an assumed figure, but that's because the amount of people living in the closet or living in denial is pretty overestimated. Even if it is 10%, 90% of people is still a significant majority. So saying "straights use her as well" is synonymous with saying she has widespread appeal in a critical mass market.

Saying she's popular with straights is saying a large portion of people are using her and therefore she's permeating pop culture more and is more relevant, because she's not being used exclusively by a niche portion of the general public. Saying "only gays use her" is really no different than saying "only kids use her." It's people trying to invalidate a pop star's success and widespread appeal by saying they're "only" used by a small portion of people.

Lack of other notable achievements. I would figure that if SO many straights AND gays liked an artist their album sales wouldn't be limited to the 3 million range damn near every album. It would show in all aspects of one's career since straight men own TV's, listen to radio, watch movies, buy magazines, etc.

In summation, it's a baseless claim with no merit as it can't be proven and it has no actual effect on one's career that consists of nothing but mediocre and late numbers.
