Blackout was a game changer musically but was panned by critics initially until they decided to backpedal once they saw the impact that the album had on subsequent music releases. Critics and fans alike were expecting the album to be bad because of what she was going through at the time, so it was VERY underrated upon release. It took a while for people to really appreciate it. BEYONCÉ, on the other hand, received a lot of praise when it was released, but a lot of that praise was directed at the release instead of the actual music. I feel like people overhyped the music because of all the excitement surrounding the surprise release. BEYONCÉ received all of the hype that 4 should have had just because of all the excitement surrounding the release. I think a lot of people also had trouble separating BEYONCÉ the album from BEYONCÉ the surprise release and marketing strategy.

!!!!!
4 is just on a musical level BEYONCÉ couldn't reach.
Beyonce is treated as if its beyonces feminist manifesto for herself and everyone needs to apply it to themselves and they treat her like god and its obnoxious. I genuinely think its her best album, however I don't think its world-changing or breaking the mold. And I don't think the feminist aspects of the record are substantial enough to be hailed.
Blackout is Britneys best pop record for reasons that were unintentional. They set out to make an urban-pop album for her which they did which was good, but the record is really her best because it encapsulates in music that whole train wreck time period for her and the whole train wreck bad girl time period in general. It was like the 2005-2007 britney, paris, lindsay era put into a pop album with Britney at the helm and it worked. It put a cap on it. And Britneys obviously half hearted efforts made the album even better because it aligned with the era. But all of that is not premeditated, so when people try to give her so much credit for making a statement with this record or give the producers so much credit for changing the direction of pop music or some **** its like no. They made a typical urban pop record that did not change the direction of the industry. All the reasons the album is great are not reasons you can give Britney much credit for and are not groundbreaking. Its production was literally of its time period, it makes me cringe when people try to act like it set the stage for dance pop or dubstep or whatever. No. Stop. No. For the longest time I thought Blackout was produced by Timbaland who literally produced every album within that year and the year before.
